Forrest Gump FULL Reaction

Touching and thoughtful, sad yet hopeful... this film really takes you on a powerful journey

Forrest Gump FULL Reaction

Comments

I decided to watch the full reaction to help me get through all the ironing I had to do…and I’m so glad I did! This was such a beautiful reaction Thor! I loved seeing this film through your eyes and your sensitivity to all the emotional scenes (Bubba, Forrest’s mother dying, Jenny revisiting her old house and the ending). I think I even gained a bit more sympathy for Jenny although she still frustrated me at times. Forrest’s love for her warms my heart though. His devotion for her and his unconditional love until the very end felt so pure. Who wouldn’t want to be loved like that? And I agree with you that this is Tom Hank’s best performance. Forrest was so loveable, endearing and the scene at grave…I mean literal tears…it still gets me 😭 But as bittersweet as the ending was, it always made me happy that Forrest got to be a dad. Some random thoughts: 1. I also loved the soundtrack to this film. It’s my kind of music (“old” music basically haha) 2. It’s funny how you can’t pin point the genre of this film. I think that’s fitting because isn’t that like life? The film’s quote “life is like a box of chocolates” really sums up it perfectly. 3. “I don’t like the rain though, I feel like something bad is gonna happen”…I was dying…I think Buffy really broke you 😂Rain can be symbolic for romance too, Thor! hahahaha 4. Also Lieutenant Dan was always my second favourite character after Forrest. I cannot imagine the trauma of losing both your legs. But I was so happy that he turned his life around and that you liked his arc as well. I will say that rewatching it this time, there was something strangely attractive about Lt. Dan haha. He was brash at times but that actor really has great charisma. Lt. Dan would make a much better “Jack Sparrow” in my opinion ;) 5. Final point. What I love about Forrest’s arc is how being “different” served him so well in life. The simplicity of how he viewed the world allowed him to endure so many of the hardships he had to face. I never felt like he tried hard to overcome anything. He approached life very much like a child and I love that. I think that’s why this film had such a hopeful tone throughout. As adults we tend to over complicate things and that’s how we can dwell on the negatives or become cynical. Forrest doing his long distance running is such a great metaphor for that, and his journey overall. He ran purely because he wanted to and he did amazing things because he came from a mindset of simplicity instead of focusing on the obstacles. Forrest always followed his heart without a second thought and I really admire him for that. Anyway, this is probably the best reaction I’ve seen to this film…and it really is a special film. I thoroughly enjoyed this one :) PS: Yes, the film does have a theme of destiny, but that leads down the philosophical rabbit hole, so I’ll end it here (don’t worry!)

I remember not liking Jenny in this film and I generally have great empathy for characters that have gone through trauma. I get that Jenny’s actions stemmed from her abuse but I always felt detached from her (which was perhaps the intent). She just came across too cold for me and I really wanted to empathise with her because I do understand the long term damage of abuse. Or maybe Thor is just more compassionate than me 😅…anyway, I’m so behind on reactions but looks like this will be a good one :)

I love the empathy you have for characters, generally speaking and, here, specifically for Jenny. I've seen a couple of reactions that demonise Jenny when really, she's just broken and self-destructive. People don't realise what abuse can do to a person. I'm sure she always loved Forrest even though it wasn't always in the way he wanted, but sometimes people love us the best they know/can. There's a fantastic channel on YT called "Soft White Underbelly". It's basically a docu-series/ interviews with mostly residents from Skid Row (but not only). There hardly is an interview where the interviewee isn't a victim of abuse and child abuse in particular. Some of it is hard to watch and absolutely heartbreaking, but I highly recommend it. If we all had mom's like Forrest, I'm sure the world would be a better place. I'm sure you're booked with reactions, but if you're still interested in watching smth with Geena Davis (from Beetlejuice) AND Tom Hanks, I recommend "A League of Their Own". The director also passed away a couple of weeks ago, so that'd be a tribute.
