Steampunk sticky post or something...

Trevayne has politely asked for a sticky post to be put up for people to be able to talk about Steam.

Here it is.

Right now, why do they need green energy? There is no evidence that this world is producing enough energy to affect the climate at all.

Trevayne

The underlying technology of the world is not fully defined, but it looks like they do everything that is high tech for this world via mage crafting. They don't have the power sources and tools to do things without mage crafting. The world is at a medieval/renaissance tech level, with transportation via sailing ships and horses aside from the aether tech airships.

Trevayne

they haven't really discovered plastics, right? Could 3D printing be a thing he could get started somehow, or would you need more computer components for that? Well, I guess there are other shop tools and such that could be made that they might not have

I wish he could convincingly do something with green energy. Solar might be too complicated even with magic beyond using it for heating, at least the way we do it, but maybe hydroelectric? (I did read somewhere that there was a way to get solar energy with basically a specific stack of metals melted into rods or some such, but idk how real that idea was) and could he figure out heat pumps with some non-toxic refrigerant, or a magic alternative? Nuclear would probably be too dangerous and there'd be no knowledge of its dangers

Interesting steam question, William wants to end slavery and set up a democracy. I think he can manage the first, but is going to have a lot of trouble with the second. However, while I agree with those that say it is really hard to go from feudalism to a modern parliamentary democracy in one fell swoop, there are intermediate steps. For example, the first OTL British step towards democracy was Magna Carta. That was basically the nobles putting some limits on the crown. Since that was a medieval feudal innovation, I don't see why Lindholm could not do that. A bigger innovation would be creating a bi-cameral parliament with a house of Lords and a house of Commons. I expect that given the role of the nobility, most of the power would be with the Lords and the crown. The Commons would be a place for the non-nobles to try to get some input into the system and at least try to get their views heard but the nobility and the crown. All of this is first going to require that the crown win the upcoming civil war. Although a Magna carta equivalent might emerge during the war as a way for the Crown to appear more reasonable and thus encourage fence-sitting nobles to join the Cown's side.

I'll be making a post about it tomorrow.

Since it is 28 December, Blue could you please tell us if we are looking at an early or mid-January drop for the first chapter. I am hoping for Friday the second, but will be travelling so I might not comment that fast.
