How dare this fictional priest give a bad name to the Catholic church! It almost makes me forget about the real things the Catholic church did alongside the N@zis in WWII and all the p3dophelia they engaged in and covered up!

Having Tony kill someone on screen like that was heavily pushed back on by HBO executives. They even threatened to cancel the show over it. They didn't think that people would be able to like or empathize with Tony after the scene. It was the first time a show's main protagonist was openly "evil" in this way.

This is one of David Chase's favorite episodes. I guess he said if the show didn't get picked up he would have made a movie just out of this episode. He said that even if you knew nothing about anyone in the show the story stands on its own. Things to notice: James Gandolfini... The way he looks at Meadow in the restaurant scene. His look speaks volumes. He didn't need to say a word and you could see the pride in how he looked at his daughter. Going forward gandolfini starts to use a lot more of that. There were moments in the script where he just wouldn't read... He would give a look to convey the words in the script. His genius on this show is just beginning... There are no words. Edie Falco (Carmella) will go on to be an acting tour de force in this show. She is good now but in a season or two... She becomes outstanding. The discomfort of the "confession" scene is amazing. Your reaction is proof positive of that. The confession was shot like a sex scene... Creepy and intense. The use of silence in this show is another thing to take note of. The tension that builds from complete silence. While all the shows of this time would choose to fill up with background noises and music beds... The Sopranos let the tension build with absolute silence. Great reaction Tom
