The series wasn't based on anything it was an original work. The books came later and they're not exactly based on the show, its complicated.

People wanting Old books that contains "dated" language (shall we say) or cartoons with long running Characters (apu) getting criticized for something they have done for years... I mean, I don't say it is THAT bad, I am just saying it does happen. :)
