"So, got yerself locked up, eh?" The mysterious voice said, the voice origin difficult to track in my cell.
"Well, whatever you did to be here, you're outside of the reach of the law now."
As I searched for the source of the voice, the closer I approached to the overflow drain that barely kept the dampness at bay, the louder, and strangely, deeper, the voice became.
"I might be your only hope, I fear. This will be your coffin, if you can't find your way out. Another corpse ferried off in the underground waterway. I've been here for... well... you could say I've been here for quite some time.
The longer I listened to the voice, the less human it sounded.
"Now, I could assist in this situation. In fact, it would cost so very little. See, my followers..." the voice continued, it's cadence becoming less usual and each word nearly hissing, "We find our flock among the imprisoned. I can help you... Help you esscapppe...."
"No one walks free for nothing!" I exclaimed. "What's the catch?"
"Oh, the price is still your freedom. It's just a different kind of imprisonment, you see. However, being imprisoned by me can give you abilities beyond anything you could have accomplished yourself. See, all my flock are prisoners of power..."
"What would you have me do?" I said as I surrendered myself, defeated.
"Yes.. Good." the voice affirmed. Without explanation, my cell door clicked, unlocked and opened. "Just beyond your cell is a creature, locked in the trapdoor. Help your fellow imprisoned, and your life will be mine, along with the power I bestow upon you."
