Japanese Phonetics Episode 80—LIVE!

Bibliography
Japanese Phonetics Index Page

Good evening Patrons! The eightieth episode of Japanese Phonetics is live! In this lesson we see how four common suffixes affect pitch-accent in everyday speech.

Note: Both the 掛け(かけ)and 立て (たて)suffixes in these lessons are often written simply as かけ and たて, as in 読みかけ and 焼きたて, though of course it's also acceptable to use the kanji variants as well, as in 読み掛け and 焼き立て.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns with regards to this lesson, please don't hesitate to leave a comment below. Thank you very much for your continued support, and good luck with your Japanese studies!

Best from Beppu,

Dogen san. Im some what an advanced learner by my self, I finished whole series just in two weeks, I wish there was more videos uploaded, but regardless, thank you for your effort. I bought this subscription intendedly upon my arrival at japan that will be one month later. There is really no content creater take this issue this gravely. Which one book do you suggest for pitch accent(that is most comprehensive) I'll make sure I buy that upon my arrival as well.

Hi Gambel! Thank you for your post. I unfortunately can't check all of these for exceptions, but there are definitely trends with certain suffixes, which you seem to have picked up on. For example, 化 does make the noun before it 平板, as does 性. I can, however, let you know that the newer version of the NHK accent dictionary has an appendix that seems to cover most (potentially all) of these! I think it would be an excellent resource for you to check out if you're interested in this phenomenon. Cheers!

I know the point of this series is to let people know about common patterns/rules, but I think I noticed some patterns I wanted to ask about. I found these patterns by parsing available pitch accent data in the kanjium repository at accents.txt All of these seem to apply when attaching as a suffix to 2 kanji nouns, creating a 3 kanji compound. 性 (せい), -ty; -ity; -ness; -cy. Creates a heiban compound. 可能性 互換性 主体性 The only two words I found that were exceptions were 疑陽性, but I feel like this word isn't using 性 as a suffix the same way the others are so it doesn't really count. 老人性 is listed as nakadana in the dictionary but the JapanesePod101 pronunciation and pronunciations I found in yt videos seem to pronounce it as flat. 系 (けい), system/series. Creates a heiban compound. I was not able to find any exceptions, but this suffix is kind of rare. Examples such as: 銀河系 神経系 生態系 太陽系 化 (change to ...; becoming ...; making into ...; -ization; -ification) 科 (department; section; faculty; school; arm, course (of study); branch of study; specialization, (taxonomical) family) 家 (-ist; -er) All pronounced か also create heiban compounds with no real exceptions I could find. 単純化 婦人科 政治家 病 (びょう), disease also makes heiban compounds 心臓病 伝染病 白血病 And lastly, when 所 appears as a suffix read じょ, it seemds to create either heiban or odaka compounds (in many cases, both are listed as acceptable), and I didn't find any outliers. Examples include 診療所 停留所 洗面所 But when it's read as しょ instead, the pattern somewhat holds but there are a good amount of common outliers like 区役所 刑務所 市役所 I also found a similar pattern for 書 (しょ) where many compounds become heiban or odaka (or both) but with a good amount of exceptions. I know this was a lot I just threw at you so I definitely understand why you didn't go over these suffixes, as many are rare or have a good amount of exceptions. I was just wondering if you or any other resources are aware of/have pointed out these patterns, because I'm kind of curious to see if I was onto something or didn't look hard enough for outliers. Thank you!

Gambel

Thank you for the feedback, and お疲れ様 on getting through the series! While there are still some lessons that I would like to make for the series, further topics start to get into more obscure, unique, or uncommon rules. One of my initial goals for the series—as I have mentioned from time to time in the lessons—was to give learners high quality content that makes the most of their time and effort by covering not every last little rule but by covering more general rules that provide broader coverage; essentially giving learners more bang for their buck. In keeping with these goals, I have been putting time, resources, and effort into updating older lessons with high quality native recordings, fixing audio issues, or even fixing and replacing lessons when I have found new information or where my thinking on a certain topic has changed. So, yes, there are still some lessons I would like to cover, but at this point it's hard for me to say when I will be able to script and produce these. The best I can say for now is stay tuned for updates—I try to talk about what I’m working on with regards to Patreon in standalone posts at least once a month, if not more regularly. Without getting into detail, I can say I do have some completely new content planned for once I've caught up on the lesson updates that need to be done!

Secondly just checking this is really the last one? On the video it says something will be covered in the next video, but I see that no more were made since July 2020

Hi Dogen, I've finally completed all 80 of these lessons after about a year, and want to say thank you for all the work you put into it! Definitely high quality content.

Hi DCglot! The flashcards don't go beyond lesson 32 because the original creator of the deck became a bit too busy to update the cards. That said, I actually took down the deck from this site as my pronunciation in some of the earlier lessons is less refined as it is now, and I would like patrons to use the lessons to learn the very important fundamental rules, rather than use them as a substitute for native speech immersion. Do you mind telling me where you found the deck? Cheers!

Dogen

Hey dogen , I haven't reached so far in series yet so this question isn't about this lessons content. I'm on lesson 25 right now and I have been using this series in combination with an anki deck I found over for this series , however it only goes upto lesson 32. Is this latest version of the deck of the deck or is there another one with content from the lessons after 32?
