Damned Bridge

"Ye want to know about Blieth Dúmata, the Damned Bridge, eh?"

The dwarf replies with a tankard in hand, slurring through his ale-soaked beard.

"Aye, I can tell ye of it. No doubt ye know we built it in alliance with the neighboring humans centuries ago, in the interest of "trade" and "peace". Ye also likely remember that peace was short-lived, and Blieth Dúmata was the chokepoint that kept our beautiful cities safe. Our ire from betrayal fueled our grudges, and we cared not for their dead. Decades were spent while the giant statues of Humankind watched with somber stone faces as we cast the bodies of their kin from the bridge into the chasm below. What ye don't know is why we still light the torches after we abandoned that blasted bridge ages ago."

The dwarf's expression becomes dark, his tone ominous.

"Ye best beware. We know not what lives down the depths beyond the shafts and stairs, but they are plentiful. If ye tread softly, ye can hear them feast on the bones of our enemies. Countless bodies we threw over the edge. In doing so, a new evil grew. The price was paid, and we still pay it, for it's now our woeful duty to be caretakers. The flaming braziers keep the shadows at bay, and in turn keeps the damned abominations in the pit. If you cross Blieth Dúmata, beware the shadows, and stay to the light!"
