This is actually one of my favorite Grey videos. I just goes to show how far he goes to do proper research wich should be an inspiraiton to all historians, jurnalists, writers and especially other youtubers who want to do education and information videos. Thanks for sharing this Grey.

Emil Lund

Hello

Samuel Chavez

Same...

just me

I loved this it's why I signed up tbh. when you were lamenting having no one to talk to about it I irrationally thought that you could have called me. the fact that you don't know me, don't have my numbe,r and aren't going to call some random person didn't occur for at least 10 seconds lol

Steven Ashford

I have been forever curious about the original of my last name if only to find the correct family crest. I tried doing the 23 and me thing and asked my parents if they have done any genealogy research into our family tree. Best we could come up with is a handful of crests that I don't feel are different enough in name to not be somehow related. I've always been curious. Seeing the amount of work that went into this honestly has me a bit discouraged. I am absolutely floored and impressed of the level of research that went into this though. This was wonderful to watch.

Thomas Vincent Barr II

I adore your videos; I love the way you conceptualize abstractions (the forest of knowledge, etc). Also wanted to say that during the Tiffany videos, any time you would lament(?) "who else in the world would be interested / get excited / be so enthralled as to chase this kind of info" ... I was definitely waving my hands in the air like a bombastic Hermione, screaming "me! me! me! I LOVE this; I would do this!!" etc. My spouse gently pointed out that - due to limitations on my mobility and also the tragedy of living in the absolute middle of nowhere - I would only have access to Internet based research, and therefore, unable to gather the kind of data that The Moste Holy Grey can track down. (which was a bit of a bummer, and she had to sleep on the couch that night) I'm not sure I have a bigger point other than to say "hello, I love your work" and also, "thank you for helping this middle-of-nowhere home-bound gal keep her brain functioning & feeling a little less alone in the world."

Amata

I'm going with "same" as my response here. This level of detail is why I came over to Patreon. Thanks Grey.

Liz and Bryan Christie

I love your videos Grey! This video and the New Jersey/New York one are my two favorite videos! It gives us some insight into the research process. Thank you for brightening my day! (And for helping me name my new Dungeons and Dragons character, lol!)

Sarah Moore

As a librarian with an interest in scholarly communication, I enjoyed this video v. much, almost even more than the Battle of the Sharks. Also, thank you for demonstrating that there has ALWAYS been junk and errors in published mediums, not just on the Internet.

Douglas Lauder

And me

JR_HartleyPool

As I have seen on this post, I too signed up after seeing this video. Watched all the way to the end (through 2 days) and loved every minute of your journey. I am finding it is the research aspect of this that I love a lot. I wish i had access to your libraries.

Bill Peace

Yeah, i added this to my patron because of this, and the Someone Dead Ruined My Life video too. Your slow decent into insanity is nothing if not entertaining. Thank you!

Dave Cameron

Just became a patron after watching this because damn, I understand that rabbit hole.

Sara Hatch

I started supporting because of this video. Amazing work, and thank you!

Josh Senick

Came here to say this.

Carlos Garcia

Man, I just love this pure passion and truth seeking of yours

Eduardo Cardoso

Happily joined the Patreon because of the message at the end! I love your work and am more than happy to support it! ❤️

Katie O'Donnell

Been watching your videos for years and have always been blown away but how much time and energy you put into them. After watching I decided that I wanted to contribute and happily created a patron account to support my favorite YouTube creator. Hope to see many, many more videos from you and that you're doing well and don't get too lost in that deep, dark forest of knowledge.

John Brody

The time an energy spent on this single litte footnote in history is truely awesome.

Christoffer Årstrand

This video made me almost go and stop my patreon contribution. It kind of feels like I'm enabling some kind of mental health issue.

John Ridley

Can I just say how much I loved this video? Amazing. It was so enjoyable! Just wanted you to know that your hard work over months brought joy to someone’s life. I am self-supported and happy to help support you in some small way. Take care!

Brian Suker

Hi Grey, I have been enjoying your videos for quite a long time and I love all about them: the topic, the tone of your voice, your diction, the ambiant music, the drawings, your dedication and the long hours of research. This last video made me realise, as you say so at the end, that yes, you spend huge amount of time for not enough $$$ rewards. I'm contributing so that you continue your huge work as well as anybody helping you in your journey. Huge thank you!

Paolo

Hi Grey, I've been watching your videos for years and you have taught me a lot about many things of which I've always enjoyed. I joined your patreon because it's obvious that you care, and I want to support your future projects, regardless of how random it may seem or how the YouTube algorithms will react. Thanks for being one of the few creators that puts in the time and resources to share what you know and learned.

Esau Cuevas

Tiffany drove me over the edge.

David Kensiski

After this video my family decided to support this channel. We appreciate his hard work and pursuit of accurate knowledge. We want him to know his hard work is valued.

Chris Cleveland

I did the same. It’s great to support such interesting videos

Michael St Peter

After watching this video I bought a year of the video sponsors tier.

Anthony Paolilli

After this video i bought a year. Been following your videos since they first went viral, and I love them! Glad I can support.

Matthew Curtis

“Rules for Rulers” back then brought me to your channel, Britanny Tiffany made me a Bee thingy. Thanks for your unique work!

Sebastian Michaelsen

Loved this series and thanks for bringing us a long for part of the journey!

S J

Agree with Chris Decker - the original Tiffany video was great, but the behind the scenes was next level! We have all been there where we have thoughts we MUST get out of our heads!

Steven Andres

Agreed, what a great video, you can't help but marvel at the efforts undertaken. Thanks a lot!

Adam Juhasz

I don't know if this helps or hurts, but I liked this video much more than the Tiffany video :)

Chris Decker

Switched my $3 HI to a $5 Grey purely because of the ending to this video. It’s worth every cent.

MultiFish

I've been following your videos for a while, and I think it's time to give a bit more! Thanks for all the nice content :)

Ben Cor

The ending got me signed up immediately. “These videos aren’t for everyone, they’re for you” is brilliant I’ve been consuming everything you put out since halfway through hello internet. Keep it up!!

Andrew Oliver

Ok, yes a lot of work, but OMG, I LOVED this vid, and am now a patron. So go you. Thank you. Keep it up, please.

Robert Keefer

I listened to Hello Internet when it was on, and know how difficult it is for Grey to pretend to be like the humans, which is why I'm always so touched by those talks at the end. *sniff* Enjoy your $4.95 you beautiful robot.

Max Roberts

Thank you for this video. Just signed up after watching to the end (of course I would). I ABSOLUTELY love these sorts of "rabbit hole" bits of knowledge. Thank you again for all your time and sanity you put into this video. It is appreciated.

TJ

last time you talked about patreon like this ("The Future of the Channel, and You."; that was 2 years ago???) i was a broke student and how you explicitly thought about students made me both happy and sad that i didn't have the money. well now i do! happy to put my bit in the hat now

We adore the "rabbit hole" videos. I hope you get a lot of new patrons from this so you get the message that this type of video is valued.

Elise & Thomas Constantine

This was the push that conviced me to be a patron. Really good work you are doing man, thank you for everything!

Alejandro Montiel

😆This was 100% the educational laugh that I needed. Thank you!

Sean

I love that you took the time to follow the rabbit hole to an extreme extent. Makes me wonder how many papers I wrote propagated errors due to reading available in the time I had.

Susan Moury

If you have a daughter, what would you name her?

Antoine Bruguier

I absolutely loved the Tiffany videos, and the tale of the "Scotinomicron" and its translation was just delicious.

Peter Spalthoff

Also, megaprops to anyone who gets "Thomas Hearne" onto the Grey Wall of Thanks...

David Perek

One day in the distant future the future-me will show this video to children (possibly even my own), when they ask me why there is infinite number of research topics on finite human history; "Here is part of why, lads and lasses. Because history is not as linear as it appears to be, and because humans make mistakes. A lot of them."

Beslav

Like when Kirk screamed "KHAN!!!" but this time it is "HEARNE!!!". Seems like one mind a century needs to be driven to yell this out.

David Perek

I actually liked the poem video more than the Tiffany video. It captures how investigative work can be simultaneously fascinating and depressing. Keep your head up. We love your work, even when you are chasing fruitless poems through space and time.

Michael Rück

I want to live in the graphical representation of the forest of knowledge. Every time it appears, it's dope.

S.M.P.

This is why I subscribe on patron

Joshua T

Nice ending. Am I still subscribed? I can't see now.

Bester

I love that on Patreon we’re getting it with the original title he would have given it and YouTube gets the strategised title like Doug from Vastibulum taught us.

William Pine

Awesome work :)

Rasmus Christian Pedersen

Me too

Kent W.Fevurly

All your vids are impressive, but this one was outstanding—following a cobweb of clues, solving a mystery, and hearing about two 18th century biatches feuding with each other. HEAVEN!💥💥💥💥

Jill

Very heartfelt.... suffered the same many times chasing the lore of Southwest Asia.

Just want to add my "same here" to what Warren said. Old subscriber, new patron, last vid was unbelievably good. Thank you.

Joel

Became a Bonnie Bee with this video, and the name definitely got me over the finish line. Not 100% clear on the difference between Bonnie Bees and Bonny Bees though. 🐝 🐝 🐝

Tom Schlatter

I've been watching your videos for years, and they're all good, but some are excellent. This video convinced me to subscribe to you on Patreon. I find this kind of content absolutely fascinating, and it deserves to exist. The only way that's going to happen is for people like us to pay for it to be created because there's no way YouTube will figure out how to monetize it effectively. Keep up the amazing work!

Warren Garabrandt

Well atleast there is some poetic justice that that Alexander Pope passed along all your grievances to Thomas Hearne before you or John Horace Round ever came across him.

Ilan

Feeling isolated sucks. I joined so you know you're not alone (also +1 for themes).

Icarus DelSol

I enjoyed this video so much that I had to go over and show my Dad, a former coalminer in his 70s. But that involved showing him the Tiffany video first so he could understand, and he's never seen a Grey video, and barely knows of the existance of YouTube...The main video was according to him both fascinating and brilliant...today's video had him laughing so much! And now I I've promised that when we're next together in a couple of weeks I'll show him more. That sir is genius.

John White

Ever since the Race for Staten Island and the search for Christopher Billopp (Billop?), these videos are by far my favorite. He may hate them because of how deceptively simple they are, but as viewer I just find them fascinating.

spiderbruce026

I would like to see your own burn book :D

Tomas Clarke

You imply you've trapped us into listening to this. Grey this is EXACTLY the kind of video I support you on patreon to make. I loved it so much. If I had access to the libraries you do I would totally just hunt down these random historical source texts like that. Alas I live in the USA, where my local library will sell older books for $1 a bag, so that they don't have to 'ruin the historic building' by adding a new wing to store them....

Alicia P.

I really care about these videos.

Paul Grodt

I feel like everyone who likes your videos enough to pledge on Patreon would probably like to hear those infodumps. Or maybe I'm the only one, in which case I'll send you my digits and you can vent to me as much as you like, because I would LOVE to sit and listen to it all.

Kraken Artificer

If you are not paying for learning about two guys being super petty to each other 300 years ago, then what are you wasting your money for?

nickik

OK, so .... instead of venting at the postman or the plumber or whatever, maybe make that a Patreon perk? To get to watch all the twists and turns as you navigate the forest of all knowledge, with no idea what you're seeking but enjoying the hell out of the ride -- I'd love to get the occasional email that says something like UPDATE: This "letter" is just a 35-page callout on bullshit that Hearne has apparently made up? Shots fired. UPDATE: OK, so it turns out this version of the Schotchinomicon isn't even canonical. UPDATE: He spelled the name wrong. TWICE. UPDATE: Also NONE OF THIS EVER HAPPENED APPARENTLY. fml

Kraken Artificer

Same! We set time aside to sit on the couch and specifically watch this. (Should have brought popcorn for the Hearne-Pope fight; didn't know that)

Kraken Artificer

These are the videos I'm subscribed for. The 4-dimensional tangent on something so insignificant, yet so addicting makes for a very entertaining video IMO.

TheEdgeOfRage

After years of loyal watching, I have become a loyal Patron. And also "This library predates the Dewey Decimal System." Don't most libraries? Whether DD or LC or some other sort of logical system, just have a system. Although that library did have a system....you just had to guess what it was.

Craig Brickey

The analogy at the end of the video was pure gold!

Jorge Luís

I feel at least some of your pain, sir. While researching an article that involved the origin of the US Information Agency, I sifted through 16 boxes of internal memos and receipts in the National Archives. The index was in the LAST box.

Daryk Zirkle

Picture programmer (closet genealogist) clutching her economist (closet historian) husband and shouting "I LOVE THIS!" at their Roku monitor... because we love your videos. Especially when you go on the crazy research journeys that we always wanted to take!!! Thanks for making our day better!!!

Mindie Simmons

And here I was sure you were gonna call us Grey-niacs.

Adam Sell

I think that was my favourite ever Grey video. It was absolutely superb. So glad to be a small part in supporting this.

Markus Dunphy-Knutsson

This for me is the perfect blend of analysis, perseverance, cleverness and obsessive Madness. That adds moments to my life that I thoroughly enjoy.

Krostiman

Anyone else nerd out when sharing Grey's content to others? It's always hit and miss but if they enjoy it, they passed the first test.

Zachary Gerard

lol

M

Good stuff! Earned a new patron!

Jenka Tamar

Same

Kenkire Knight

Grey, I really appreciate your content and the attention to detail. Your drive to keep things honest and thorough is really refreshing. There are very few creators who can marry up such detail with a entertaining narrative. Keep up the work. I'll be here to support.

Jerun Jose

This is why some people stress, that the path you take is more important than the place you end up. Best video in a while. :D Didn't even speed it up.

Aron Gabor

This. 100%

Mona Celeste

I have a full-time job now so I can finally join as a Patron. Love your passion Grey <3

Parth Patel

Thanks for being so sincere. I joined because I can relate. When I do something, I can't let go either, there's literally nothing I can do against it until I'm satisfied. The final part of the video is certainly the best with the mighty "go on a hike" analogy, beautifully put together sending me close to tears, ngl. So anyway, I got money to spare, don't worry about me. Just being one of probably thousands of loyal fans you will likely never have the time to speak to - not because you don't want, but because you just can't. And I understand, and maybe I just spoke for a lot of us, but rest assured this is completely normal on the internet. Enjoy it as long as you can. Keep going, I'm with you. Let there be no impossible obstacle in your path. Solomon out.

Solomon

That being said, keep up the good work.

Wolf Dean Stiles

I am sorry to say this, but I think 'bibliophile' doesn't quite cut it. It lacks the nuanced inference of a true believer sliding quietly into madness...

Wolf Dean Stiles

The best part was the subtle skootching of the chair back

Ben Gold

So, wait, the poem was made up garbage fFrom 1700, mis-copied by an idiot, all along???? Oh my god!!!

Scott Myers

Mad man like you deserves my support. Respect.

Reekt

And with this video, I became a Bonnie Bee.

Matthew Sparks

I'm happy to support you on this journey, you make videos I never knew I wanted to watch.

Rhoda

Thank you for doing this. Videos like this one is why I am here. I am jealous and amazed of the level of "someone is wrong on the Internet" spanning through literally centuries of history. Thank you very much for showing this path and correction to the world. To me it was well worth every penny and hours spent. Please consider how much a reality TV show costs and how little it provides to history. Your contribution is very cost effective in comparison.

RailwayHacker

This was simply enthralling

Andrei Simionescu

This is by far my favorite Grey video ever. I hope you continue to make research videos in medieval literature, and I just joined your patreon because I enjoyed this so much!

Scott MacDonald

Love this video! It's always a pleasure to travel the Forrest of All Knowledge with you! Would you ever consider crowdsourcing your research process a bit? I'm sure the Bonnie Bee Brigade is eager to help and I imagine that we contain many experts in lots of different fields. You could assign tasks (e.g. find book X and search it for references to poem Y) for people to do. Anything to get the Indians video faster :)

Adam Rich

I could happily hear you rant about these strange tangents for hours and hours at a time. They are strangely interesting and your voice is so calming. This Bonnie is very happy to be one of your bees

Bonnie Fiddis

Amazing video! Have you considered posting those "updates" to patrons when you need someone to vent to?

Sid

Right now, Mark Chrisler, of the podcast "The Constant: A History Of Getting Things Wrong" might be feeling like this would have been the best best episode of his podcast ever, which is already around CGP level. Seriously, go listen to it! Grey, thank you for descending into madness so we don't have to. I love competence porn!

Maggie Osterberg

CGP Grey, you are my FAVORITE kind of nerd and a man after my own heart. Thank you for many years of entertainment and knowledge! I am happy to offer you what aid I can, a proud Bonnie Bee.

Jack Stewart

The concept of the antiquarian just seeing paper and taking it is so completely on brand.

Brett Davis

Grey, that was absolutely fascinating! I get lost in research sometimes, too, but never to the extent you have with Tiffany. You might not think all that work was worth it, but, wow! Going through the process with you in this video got me very excited about DOING RESEARCH. Thanks!

Kelly Naylor

Is it wrong that one of the reasons I support this channel is so he can take these paths of insanity and then share the results?

Dennis Marsh

I would absolutely love for “Grey’s Misadventures in the Forest of All Knowledge” to become a regular segment. We so rarely get to see the endless trail of false positives, looping research arcs, and just plain schoolyard drama hidden behind a properly sourced video. Regardless, I’m always here for more Grey content of any type.

Kit Ainslie

Loved following you down this errant path. Really enjoyed it!

David Gurule

You make the world a better place, Grey. Richer. Deeper. A little stranger. Thank you.

Tim Dedopulos

Tbh I LOVE that my $5/month gets to fund Grey’s descent into madness. So entertaining, 10/10 recommend

Amanda Strausbaugh

... and the name Tiffany dates from as far back as the 1400s* *CGPGrey. “Someone Dead Ruined My Life... Again.” YouTube, YouTube, 9 Sept. 2021, www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEV9qoup2mQ. 7:00 - 7:20

The poem reminds me of Letterman used to have a segment called "The George W. Bush Joke That's Not Really a Joke" https://youtu.be/GcSoAJ8SGc8

Neil Neyman

Definitely my favorite video so far, it was amazing! Loved the sleuth work, back and forth. Reminds me a lot of my work, and I highly appreciate that. Thank you so much! I laughed out loud several times, and that rarely happens, it was incredibly relatable and informing. Hopefully you'll do this more :)

Yonadav Tapuchi

This poem led to nothing... but our entertainment!

Buzz Carrick

Have some CND Pesos Grey. Stuff like this Tiffany tangent really show people just how hard it is to truly verify bits of history. I empathize with your pain - but also know the satisfaction that comes with pinning down, definitively, whether or not some tiny scrap of information is True or False. Keep on keepin' on Chief.

Dan Zynski

I feel like I’m paying you to have repeated mental breakdowns, and I’m all here for it. Thoroughly enjoyed you first feeling like hearne was bullied a bit, and then ending up feeling it was almost justified.

Willem Maathuis

Second this sentiment

Carl Petersen

I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for including us in this behind the curtain look at your process. You should definitely make more videos like this, they are really fascinating.

Marc-Andre Ouimet

Right there with you two. I wouldn't be surprised if several of us nerds would be willing to go as far and signing NDA's just to help keep the research rabbit hole from feeling so lonely.

Paul Gray

The letters were so hilarious, it made me cheer up like I didn't in months. Thank you grey, I needed it after getting blisters on my foot due to experimenting with new shoes. I love your content and it always brings a smile to my face

Krik

It’s ok man, sometimes things don’t work out and we all need to vent. What’s important is that it’s off your chest and you can focus on new and better projects.

Orion Dye

Yeah, that's my only reservation in suggesting it, but no harm in putting the idea forward ^^

enchantedsleeper

I was thinking the same thing, would love to listen to Grey vent about this stuff in real time, just don't know how to do that while preserving his general dislike of making topics pubic before a video is released.

Pascal

I wonder if Hardigras has a connection to The son of Three Fathers by Gaston Leroux...Hardigras is the name of the son (if I remember correctly)

ChelleAnna

I like listening to you, Grey.

Michael Pipkin

Sidenote, I was reading some poetry by Alexander Pope to my 90-year-old grandmother recently (it's a thing we do on Sundays - read poetry, not specifically by Pope) and I had no idea that he was such a burn master 😂 The more you know!

enchantedsleeper

CGP Grey: *looks at Wikipedia* "citation needed" *one book purchase later* "Okay, citation checks out, we're good" Also, maybe next time you're deep in a research rabbit hole you could hold a livestream chat for some people to talk to about it? xD I know I'd definitely attend a 'CGP Grey Wants Some Company In the Forest of All Knowledge' chat to hear about the super obscure topics that you care most about xD

enchantedsleeper

That's what I thought as well! There's still a correlation between the two!

enchantedsleeper

lmao at Grey breaking down ~16:00. End message was nice too ❤️

Charlie Cooksey

Incredible.

Jay G

I put this in the discord but I'll say it here too. We love videos like this; We all love you Grey. Keep doing what you're doing. I upped my membership level to show my appreciation (looks like my old level had gone away?)

John Dye

I love the random rambles through recorded history. I'm sold on the patreon. On my birthday too!

MT

"I have one requirement first: you must be financially self-supporting" Phew, just barely qualify. University pay ain't great, and the housing ain't cheap.

luca0483

Her name was Theophania... but she may have used Tiffany as her nickname... so yeah, it may have been a failed attempt to find a medieval Tiffany... but you may have been able to find a proof for Tiffany as a nickname for Theophania. Too bad you weren't able to find the actual source of the poem itself to check when it was written as it could have been the definitive proof of the Theophania = Tiffany and that some Theophanias used Tiffany as their name.

Iñigo Zubieta

I just want to mention that this video was fascinating, and I’d love to see more explanations of your trek through the forest of all knowledge to find information, even if it just ends in failure and disproving one (in theory) “simple” concept. Anyways, this was a wonderful video as always, and I’m glad you now have more people to talk to about The Tiff.
