This episode kicked my ass. I clearly need a break -- I was planning to take this month off, but then I missed deadline so technically I'm posting this during my vacation; I'm taking a badly needed break after this. I may be back next month or I might extend it, either way you don't need to adjust your patronage since I get paid by the video anyway
But as always check for my mistakes!
And as always, please vote in the Song vs. Song poll! We're doing Sia's "Chandelier" vs. Miley Cyrus's "Wrecking Ball": https://www.patreon.com/songvssong/posts
Thanks for all of your hard work, Todd. I feel unfortunate that I haven't seen your videos until just about a week ago but I've watched every one since then. Really enjoy your musical perspective and fair criticisms. I wasn't sure where to drop this suggestion but I'm sure it has probably been referenced before for Trainwreckords. I'd have to say Angelic 2 The Core by Corey Feldman. As far as derailing a music career, I'm not sure one was ever really established but it has to rank somewhere up there with one of the worst albums of all time. Lol thanks again for all of the great content.

Alice in Chains funnily enough started out as a Hair Metal band called Sleze, and then Alice N Chainz, their box set has some demos of their hair metal phase and you can still hear some elements on Facelift.

Eh I think this is more listenable then "Load"(which was a "Load" alright, a Load of shit for the most part) which was WAY too fucking long for it's own good with way too much filler and too many overlong, boring and mediocre songs.

I think Crue did get better after this album though as New Tattoo was a fine return to form and Saints of Los Angeles was their best album since Dr Feelgood.

Its funny as a few iconic metal bands of the 80's went through low points in the 90's without their most famous lead singer. Yet unlike Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath Crue seem to be the only one who got worse once their singer returned.

After giving it some thought, “Brandon” is worse than “How Many Say I”. As awful as Eddie’s song is, at least he doesn’t come off as a moron when he sings it. Tommy sounds like he just learned that the baby comes out of the mommy.

What gets me is the random woodworking footage spliced into the video for Afraid... I mean, I get it, what with the guy polishing the doll woman's wooden leg, but... working on a lathe is actually really relaxing, so it doesn't fit the tone, at all.

I actually had a similar vibe with a different Trainwreckord. When Todd did his episode on Witness, I kept thinking of Get to Heaven by Everything Everything, which came out the year before and made big summery pop songs out of the geopolitical anxieties that later gave way to Brexit and Trump. It’s very doubtful that Katy Perry used Everything Everything as an inspiration for “purposeful pop” – I don’t think anyone in the States listens to them except for weird indie kids and Radiohead fans – but it’s also not impossible either.

Y'know, Todd doesn't bring them up in the litany of influences this album has, but I kept being reminded of another 90's band who mixed hard, trashy glam rock with hints of scuzzy 90's gothic industrial and sardonic self-deprecating lyrics, and who also played a lot on pig imagery, to the point one of their biggest songs was called "We Are The Pigs": Suede. Dunno how likely the most infamously unable-to-cross-over Britpop band having an impact on this album is, but that's what I hear. Probably would've made a better target to aim for than "Everything", at least.

Ringo the 4th would make for a funny trainwreckord. Todd has been looking for an “established act does disco” video, for which this mess would be perfect.
I’d probably prefer Elliot Roberts talking about it in his eventual “Ringo solo album ranking” video though. Elliot does good stuff, go check him out.

I thought most of the bands came off as fine in that documentary and even some Hair Bands have argued that Nirvana didn't really kill off hair metal and it was already on the decline as Warrant frontman Jani Lane recounted seeing their posters in the record label building being taken down and replaced with posters of Alice in Chains so the groundwork was already being laid.
Nirvana actually never wanted to be famous, they were perfectly happy being obscure and unknown and i'd argue fame is what led to Cobain's death as he never really seemed happy with his success and looked deeply uncomfortable.

Peter's book had some fascinating stories but it was a lot of whiny nonsense, still not as bad as Bobby Blotzer's book. I think Out of Control is a bigger Trainwreckord, Peter blamed lack of label promotion for it's failure but I think the real truth was fans just weren't interested in him as a solo artist(at least not as much as Ace).
i think Music from the Elder was a Trainwreckord as that was the end of KISS leading the trends and it forced them to ditch their makeup for a while and they had to rely on their 70s songs for their 90s comeback.

This is fun timing because I've been listening to a lot of them recently (and I also think their ballads suck). They really struck me as the kind of band that could only exist in the exact time period they started in, outside of it they just seem like an oddity. Some awesome songs though. Have a good long break Todd and thanks for another great episode!

I watched a lot of Headbanger’s Ball as a kid – I’m probably one of the few millennials who remembers Riki Rachtman, unless he got a shit-ton of new followers from Monday Nitro – and Mötley Crüe was one of my earliest favorite bands (the other two being Skid Row and Aerosmith). My mom bought me Decade of Decadence on cassette and a VHS compilation of their music videos. The subject matter went way over my head as a four year-old, but I thought they were fucking awesome. I even went as a hair metal rocker – complete with a jean jacket vest and oversized black curly wig – to my preschool Halloween party (not entirely unlike a shrunk down John Corabi).
Part of me feels an odd sense of nostalgia towards The Crüe for that reason. For a lot of people, Nevermind instantly vaporized everything that came before it. But as someone who watched MTV during that weird fucking stretch between 1989 and 1991, I think it might have given me the broad appreciation for music that’s carried into my adult years. At the same time though…this scene really needed to die. I tried watching The Decline of Western Civilization Part II a few years ago, which follows a couple of struggling L.A. bands in the oversaturated hair metal scene and contains interviews with bonafide rock stars from that time – and except for Alice Cooper and Lemmy, everyone comes off like a massive asshole in that documentary. Rock had become too comfortably Spinal Tap and something had to change.
I kind of respect The Crüe for following bands like Manic Street Preachers and Pantera…but Nikki Sixx isn’t Richey Edwards and Vince Neil sure as shit isn’t Phil Anselmo. Japanese bands like Buck-Tick and Malice Mizer actually did a great job of balancing stadium glam rock with nineties darkwave, but…yeah, this sounds like ass. I hope Charlie Clouser at least got paid decently if he really did work on this.
Patreon rant/reminiscence/thing over. Great work as always. Enjoy your vacation.

Mentioning Peter Criss towards the end made me think - his solo album from ‘78 was very much a trainwreckord for him. Since Kiss arguably doesn’t have a trainwreckord, this’d be the best way to talk about the solo album project as a whole and how Peter’s album basically was his end as a contributor in the band.
Also, Peter’s book is legitimately one of the most awful musician autobiographies I’ve ever read. The man has almost zero self-awareness and refuses to take any responsibility for his bullshit (even when it looks like he’s gonna do it). 10/10 would hateread again.

The similarities between this and "Van Halen III" - save for the original vocalist returning - are incredible. Songs written for someone else's vocal range, a weird mishmash of styles, a completely overmatched producer, the most famous non-singing member actually getting to sing an epically cringey ballad - it's all here.
I really do like "Afraid," though, so that's one more good song than "VH3" had on it.

I don't think they're all awful people, at least not Nikki, that guy had a genuinely fucked up childhood with no real chance of a normal life, so it's a miracle he's even still alive. Also felt pretty bad for Mick with his ankylosis condition that had been causing him constant pain since he was 19 (which is what drove him to drink so much)Vince and Tommy seemed to choose to be bad seemingly just for the hell of it whereas Nikki and Mick just seemingly got dealt a bad hand in life and tried to numb the pain with drugs and alcohol.

they sort of did do that though with the Quarternary EP where each band member did a song in their own style, Tommy Lee was the one who was really into the industrial stuff(and the song he did on that EP "Planet Boom" got remade for the Pamela Anderson film Barb Wire as "Welcome to Planet Boom") so it was no surprise when he went into that direction with Methods of Mayhem after his exile from the band in the early 2000s.

I would've put their self-titled album here as a Trainwreckord personally as that was the true beginning of their decline in popularity, their autobiography The Dirt certainly looks at it that way, one notable passage from the book had the band members asking some fans if they wanted to meet them for autographs in the parking lot after the show, and once they got to the parking lot they were distraught to see only a handful of people asking for their autographs compared to previous tours where they'd had dozens of fans waiting for them after the show waiting for autographs, it really showed how unpopular Corabi was with the fans and how much Grunge had taken over.

I loved hearing the intro to Glitter and imagining them covering Open Up by Leftfield. And when you said Tommy Lee was going to sing, I had Eddie Van Halen flashbacks. Also 'You're All I Need' is my favourite of theirs, so they can do ballads. Fun revüe :)

I remember going to B. Dalton and thumbing through magazines like Kerrang and Hit Parader that were all about the hair metal and completely baffled as to what to do with stuff like Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. When Motley Crue’s self titled from 1994 was coming out, they tried SO HARD to hype it as some grand event that a whole generation was foaming at the mouth for (“There’s a group of kids who have never heard Crue and are desperate to experience real rock at last! Really they are!”). Heh heh, have fun going on Where Are They Now? shows to whine about how mean Kurt Cobain was to you. Say what you like about where bands like the Pixies, Jane’s Addiction, or even Bush wound up, but they aged far more gracefully than most of hair metal did…

Interesting that they mentioned Cheap Trick as an influence to the album, as Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander are credited on backing vocals on "Glitter". But glad to have this one covered, I always wondered what exactly happened in the 90s to Crue

I remember being a like 12-13 year old edgelord metalhead kid (in like the early 2000's after that was really a thing) and hearing Dr. Feelgood for the first time and getting swept away. Then hearing Generation Swine and quietly going back to Feelgood and Kickstart My Heart like nothing ever happened lol

"Face the Music" by NKOTB

It seems like Motley Crue would have been better off if the band went on hiatus for a few years in the mid-1990s so all the members could do their own side projects with their visions of what Crue should be. After that bit of experimenting and getting out of their system they could come back together and actually hash out a coherent vision.
Seems to work for Dave Grohl.
Josh Liller
2022-09-05 01:04:38 +0000 UTC
Oh boy. This is probably the first video you've done that I got a bit worried at before clicking because I have a lot of nostalgia attachment to Motley Crue... But yeah no, everything here was pretty much spot on. I really wish they had gone the "velvet revolver" route with the '94 album, and thinking Vince could just be slapped in for the songs meant for Corabi was stupid as hell. Nikki seemed to learn an important lesson which was "keep it to the solo albums", these kinds of songs go to Sixx AM to make now which is probably for the best.
"Motley Crue" really is an accurate band name. For better or worse, the whole group is kinda mismatched and Vince by himself is basically holding up the entire "hair metal" aspect, so without him they lose all of it, and with him they can't do anything else. Realizing that is probably why they don't put out albums anymore. They could probably get away with occasional singles, but trying to make a whole bunch of songs that hit that sweet spot where things match up right probably isn't doable out of their original era without sounding utterly dated and only of interest to their old diehard fans.

If you like failed attempts to save a slipping career that only cemented its death, there's a very good episode to be made on The All-American Rejects' Kids in the Street, which tries to catch the indie rock boom of 2012 and also get a little Fall Out Boy/Panic at the Disco style personality, and fails at both horribly.
