TRAINWRECKORDS: "Two the Hard Way" by Gregg Allman and Cher

Oh man, this took me so long that I didn't have time to put up the poll link! Please vote in the poll, it's real last-minute and we're way too low on votes! Better blaxploitatoin theme: "Theme from Shaft" or "Superfly"?!  https://www.patreon.com/posts/new-poll-theme-38078754

Also, as always if you see any errors, please let me know

TRAINWRECKORDS: "Two the Hard Way" by Gregg Allman and Cher

Like Kurt Cobain and Lady Gaga having a record together, full of love songs. The only song type I could see working for such divergent styles is a call-and-answer, like In The Pines.

Just to let you know that you spelled Gregg Allman’s name wrong in the thumbnail. You used the wrong spelling of Gregg. A quick reminder so you can fix it when it goes on YouTube.

I was thinking about this, too. Even as a footnote it’d still be cool to mention Elijah

Cameron Kirkpatrick

I've had to delay this one for business reasons. It should be up before the end of the month.

Todd in the Shadows

This one hasn't shown up on YouTube yet - any reason for the delay? I can't watch on my TV from Patreon :(

Daniel

No mention of Deadsy?!

Gigli wasn't that bad of a movie really, a female writer actually got fired from Variety for giving it a positive review, talk about blatant sexism, if that happened today Variety would've been turned at the stake.

RedBedroomRecords

Any mention of Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time" just makes me remember that viral Twitter thread a while back on the #1 hit song from each era. "I can't believe that worked. I only read the wikihow."

Franco del Rosario

This album feels like Cher writing fanfiction about her marriage, and then having to force her husband to go along.

Lauren & Tish Fox

While it'd be a stretch to consider myself a "fan", I think that both Sonny and Cher deserve a little more credit for their singing. Sure, their voices could be technically iffy (especially Sonny), but they both worked well with what they had and were particularly good at getting inside a song and bringing it to life. I'd much rather listen to them than to the HOLD HIGH NOTES LOUDLY!!!!! school of singing that American Idol and The Voice have sicced upon the world...

My favorite too. Pop Song Reviews and One Hit Wonderland are great but they're sometimes limited by a rigid format. Trainwreckords gives Todd freedom to tackle an album however he wants. Sometimes it's just a track by track, sometimes it's attached to a narrative of what was going on before and after release, sometimes it's something totally different like Zingalamaduni which was like solving a mystery as to why such a large act was written out of music history.

Isaac Jackson

Trainwreckords is my favorite of your shows! Makes me happy every time I see it in my email.

Michael

I want that Future/Musgraves album tho.

Peter Guilherme

Gregg Allman introducing Cher after the title card is the drunkest man I've ever seen.

I'm a little bit kitschy, and I'm a little bit rock and roll! I'm a little bit Memphis and Nashville. With a little bit of percodan in my soul.

Taylor Abrahamse

A: Awful

I can't decide if the album title is brilliant or awful.

The most culturally relevant event to come out of this debacle is when Uncle Duke got humiliatingly put on the Rolling Stone 'Cher and Gregg watch' beat in Doonesbury. Pearl and Brain guy- much better!

I haven't even watched this yet but I look forward to Trainwreckords so much

Nick Huntington-Klein

This has got to be the first time Todd you've taught me something about classic rock that I had no idea about...I now see why I had no idea about this.

Jack Darnell

If J.Lo could have got Ben Affleck in the studio she would have. As it stands, there's a lot of material on This Is Me... Then (her studio album from 2002) about Ben, and he was in the video for Jenny From The Block.

Grace

When Loving Lovers Love? *slow clap* Bravo. Perfection.

I can't get over the ridiculousness of the album title. You can roll four "the hard way," because there's an easier way to do it, but there's only one way to roll a two on a pair of dice, and that's snake eyes, a pretty famously ominous roll. So it feels like the title is telling us that they're doing this as a forced pair, (it's hard,) and they know if they succeed in the forced effort, the best case is snake eyes.

Frances Webb

Man, I really enjoy this series, especially when it's about albums I never knew much about. I love finding out all this stuff about past decades and realizing how universal showbiz bullshit and dysfunction is.

Shiny Skunk

Say what you will about Bennifer, but at least they didn't record an album...

Kristopher Bluth

Cher's career is still after 50 years legitimately alive and something people care about, and Scooby-Doo is doing celebrity crossovers again with Guess Who?. And in fact Cher is the only non-fictional, still alive celebrity from the original Scooby-Doo crossovers that still has a high profile career. I mean, the Today Show ain't asking Dick van Dyke how he's surviving the 'Rona, but they definitely asked Cher. She should totally crossover with Scooby again, that'd be so cool! I mean, if she’s willing to sing with Beavis and Butt-Head, she should be down for Scooby again.

JasSpy

I can't figure out what it says, can someone share what it says?

Idal Waves

Thumbs up for MST3K clip, you've made this nerd very happy

Jojo Evans

Goodness, looking at this album would be like if Future and Kacey Musgraves recorded a duets album together. Because yea, as you mentioned, their singing and performance styles do not mix, like, AT ALL. And there's a reason when I saw Cher live last year, that she performed absolutely NOTHING off this album. She did have a tribute to her time with Sonny, but nothing for Gregg Allman.

Tom Carter

Don't forget the "d" in "Trainwreckords"

Jack Rosen

Just from hearing that they were married made me wonder why. The thing about Cher I found out doing my research on her was that she always saw herself as a rock and roller so marrying Gregg Allman was a way of going into rock music. Even though we see her as a glitzy dance diva, Cher never liked dance music even up to Believe thinking it was a nothing genre. When she and Sonny declined in the late 60s, Cher wanted to make the heavy guitar rock of Clapton and Zeppelin but Sonny being the more conservative and business voice rejected it. Speaking of Cher, I wrote a review of "Believe" on my blog if you want to check it out https://dorazihitparade.com/2020/06/10/party-like-its-1999-chers-believe/

I guess this only qualifies for Gregg the same way Dylan & the Dead only applied to the Grateful Dead.

There's a flash frame at 1:39

When you pulled out Allman's memoir I was like "oh boy" and rubbed my hands together like a plotting cartoon character

Rick Griffin

Sweet! My favorite craptastic forgotten gem of the 70s! I remember this record not being nearly as bad as everyone acted like it was...
