POP SONG REVIEW: "Toosie Slide" by Drake

Comments

He'll probably have one of those songs in the top ten best list at the end of the year and didn't want to spoil it lol but yes I agree

I was expecting another Passionfruit, and instead we got another uh, Drake song

giascle

I think the pure disposability of Tootsie Slide is why I wouldn't call it the Song of the Pandemic. The ramifications of all this are gonna stick for a while, while I don't think Tootsie Slide could even stick in a wedding playlist. As for my pick for Song of the Pandemic? I want it to be Level of Concern, but it's honestly Death Bed, which has all the dreariness of Tootsie Slide with a more memorable sound to it. Honorable mention goes to AJR's "Bang!," which infuriates me with how much I can't hate it like the rest of AJR's music despite it being just as bad, and baffles me as to how their label is promoting their songs between the pop and alternative stations.

I thinj you're giving him too much credit. Drake is just doing what he always does it's just drake is A Mood now and everyone is feeling it. That being said I have spent the the whole quarentine driving in circles thanks to cheap gas so i'd prefer driving songs.

Katastrophe

Oh yeah, speaking of songs written specifically for these times, Stuck With You is a thing, and apparently they bought their way to #1 this week, so yeah, that's a thing sadly

I definitely agree with you, like Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa didn't quite reach #1 only peaking at #2 but it's still in the top 10 right now and could end up climbing to #1 outdoing itself, and side note Say So is Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat's first #1 single, so that should probably count for something

Though that was the first actual clip of the Imagine video I'd seen in action and I cringed so hard I think I snapped something.

Lowell Bartholomee

I dunno if I agree with this assessment! To me this is the first time Drake has felt behind the times. Like yeah, he's always gunned for that vine/tiktok/whatever audience, but he's never been so shameless about it. And yeah, this song may have gone to number one, but it fell out pretty fast, Look What You Made Me Do-style. Maybe it suits the quarantine mood, but personally, I only want to listen to bangers right now to take my mind /off/ the quarantine mood, and the fact that songs like Say So and Savage are outdoing it, to me, is a sign that maybe I'm not the only one.

Shiny Skunk

I wonder if he will talk about Surfaces Sunday Best. I can't stand that song.

Honestly I like Dua Lipa's song "Don't Start Now" because lyrically you can connect it to the lockdown "Don't show up, don't come out" kind of makes me think about how we all need to stay home and this song is a benevolent way of saying that, at least it's not like singing "Don't Stand So Close to Me" which is actually about a perverted teacher not wanting his student to get too close because she might tempt him too much

I for one haven't been bored at all during these uncertain times, i've been doing the same thing i was doing before this whole thing started-spending most of my time in my room watching films and TV shows and playing video games. I've never been all that outgoing of a person so I don't really miss going out to bars and restaurants as that was never really my thing to begin with, I was never comfortable in big crowds so I can't say i'll miss those really.

RedBedroomRecords

I honestly don't get the hate for the Imagine cover, I thought it was pretty cool.

RedBedroomRecords

The Charli XCX and Todrick Hall erasure when listing quarantine bangers smh

Fiona Lombardo

The top 10 right now is more interesting than its been in years besides this one song.

Anthony Pierre Coco

That piano intro sold me on this song more than Drake’s droning vocals ever did. That’s a strong ass melody.

Anthony Pierre Coco

FUCK I WAS SO CLOSE TO NEVER HEARING THAT IMAGINE COVER COME ON TODD THIS IS WORSE THAN RICK ROLLING

Nowhere Girl

Oh come on, is this really what pop music is right now? Seriously? I have listened to doom metal that's less dreary and monotonous than this shit, and being dreary and monotonous is Doom Metal's entire point as a genre!

Kalin

Well, now all I want to imagine is Todd's future DJ-ing wedding gigs. Sign me up d:

Phoenician

I'm not a fan but seriously, this song is even more boring than his usual crap. He needs to take a break for a little while to give people a chance to miss him.

I think Drake has become the embodiment of lawful neutral....I also think I've been playing a lot of Discord DnD for the past two months.

Jack Darnell

I wish you would have taken like a full minute to go off on the end of that video. Seriously Drake? Lighting off fireworks? You are one of the least qualified people to do something like that since nothing you do invokes anything that spectacular. When has Drake ever symbolized bright, flashy colors or loud, booming explosions? Drake’s basically one step above ASMR videos in terms of generating energy and adrenaline.

thanks Todd for that Imagine/Toosie Slide mashup now i'm sad too

Andrew Lenahan

Can we astroturf Living In a Box back onto the charts for this occasion?

ngl i was a bit disappointed when you listed a whole bunch of songs that reminded you of the quarantine and you didn't mention the songs that say "don't show up, don't come out" and "i should've stayed at home"

Loeko

This could have been the OHW of Mr. C the Slide Man. Damn you, Drake.

Colton Moore

“Basically I’m saying either way we ‘bout to slide” is the best rap lyric Trump never wrote.
