ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "The Rhythm of the Night" by Corona

Comments

All I can think of when I hear this song is James Franco as Tommy Weiseau in the Disaster Artist

Amy Poli

Always loved this song, don't mind the other songs from this era either. Mind blown that it was actually a different singer to in the video.

is it Reebok or Nike?

I always seem to have buffering problems trying to play your Vimeo uploads....the Youtube versions work fine though :/

Avalon Hamakei

"Of the Night" by Bastille is a stone cold classic. Not taking further questions.

Michael

Great episode. Love this stupid song to death. You could get some huge feelings through in dance music of the time. This of course eventually climaxed in Daft Punk's triumphant "Discovery", but also in Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You", the best dance song of the 90s and possibly all time in my opinion. Since Stardust were basically a Daft Punk side project, I guess they don't count for OHW, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on that song, Todd.

Recent events be damned, The Disaster Artist is what really lodged this in my head. Maybe it's just me, but hearing this reflected through Tommy Wiseau's mentality was (in a very odd way) really touching and even life-affirming.

Kristopher Bluth

Speaking of Italian songs, I'd still love to see "Tarzan Boy" on here.

Charles Kieser

Sayonara means goodbye. So I'd say "sayonara, don't stop" could work for "don't let the door hit you on the way out" or I would've until I checked out the lyrics now I don't know what the hell he thought sayonara meant.

Raymond

I got visibly upset when the Black Eyed Peas popped up.

Raymond

If he didn't already do an episode on them, of course3

I am so happy to be learning more about this song I love, but ARGH, I have to be a pedant... italo-house isn't really an offshoot of eurodance. The history is kinda muddled but they both started in roughly the same time period in the late '80s in different parts of Europe, and italo-house had the first big hits of either genre, likely influencing Eurodance more than the other way around. Tbh though, I feel like this is one of those cases where the genre distinction is super arbitrary, given that my understanding is that the only difference is that Eurodance is German and also has rapping sometimes.

Anthony Hansen

This song was also used to score one of the most amazing endings to an art film ever: Claire Denis' film Beau Travail, which is unfortunately not available to screen in the US right now.

Christopher Coake

Stepping back, that double-entendre subtly relating house music in Italy to the virus is a master stroke of dark comedy. I had to rewind it to catch all the nuances. That is the kind of material I am a patron for. Bravo! 👏👏

Franco del Rosario

The editing errors I noticed, aside from the one at around the 11 minute mark, as many pointed out, are a couple of sound errors, where the music itself is louder, and it's hard to hear you, namely at 3:38, 5:50, 15:29, and 16:50.

Black Eyed Peas are back? Now that's the real plague.

Jessica Forbes

Hey! Great video but heads up, there’s an error at 11 minutes. It’s a line of clipped audio mid-sentence.

Paul

I think Milli Vanilli actually made good songs, frankly I think it's bullshit that they took all the heat while their producer-the one that insisted they lie in the first place, got off scot free.

RedBedroomRecords

Living In a Box would also be appropriate for right now.

Yes to Turn up the Radio! Been ages since Todd's covered a Hair Metal band and this is the perfect one, I flipped my shit when I heard that song in one of the boss battles in the underrated video game Alpha Protocol. I also wouldn't mind seeing a OHW on Orianthi-According to You, Jennifer Paige-Crush, Dream-Loves Me Not, M2M-Don't Say You Love Me and DHT-Listen To Your Heart.

RedBedroomRecords

I'd love to see a OHW on Martika's Toy Soldiers.

Erik Robbins

No Beau Travail reference? Pity.

MJS

Many thanks to GTA V for introducing me to this awesome song!

RedBedroomRecords

Todd uploaded on my birthday that's pretty cool

YoCallMeRob

I was just thinking of this song yesterday. I did not make the timeliness connection. Damn. Also I could talk about all this stuff from either the perspective of my father who left Italy in the early 1980s and had little if any knowledge of that scene, or from my not-Italian friend who has lots of knowledge of that scene... another time, maybe. (I inherited my knowledge of Italian music of the 60s and 70s from my parents though, so I can answer those questions.)

Pietro Gagliardi

Yup, right there with you. Was so confused starting the video.

I’m legit in love with this song but I gotta give credit to gta 5 for bringing it into my life!

I dunno, would Swagga Like Us count as a second hit for her? It went to number 5. It does sample the same song, though.

Shiny Skunk

I thought this was going to be the El Debarge song actually. Also somewhat timely since Drag Race won't stop referencing it, much to the confusion of everyone.

Shiny Skunk

Holy shit, it's been years since I heard anyone bring up Mo-Do. Super Gut!

Joe G

My name's not in the credits 😭

Wasn’t this the song used in The Disaster Artist?

Yvette

Yesss this is literally one of my favorite songs of all time, it makes me so damn happy whenever I hear it - great episode, lots of cool info!

Natalie Koppen

I loved this song as a kid. My sister is 3 years older than me and she is the reason I like 90s Eurodance so much. Do all the 90s Eurodance One Hits Todd!

Also Baby Baby is all over my Youtube recommendations and has been for the last month or so.

David Claiborne

The only error I caught that I haven’t seen anyone else mention is that the music comes back in too early at 5:50

the purple shaman

Hey todd, what the hell happened like 11 minutes in? Lol

Dan Barber

There's an awkward cut at around the 11 minute mark.

David Claiborne

When you said "Italian with dance hits in German-speaking countries" I thought this would be the guy who made 1-2-Polizei..guess not. I never heard of Shanghai and the other song , they have been completely forgotten In Europe too.

RPGFan

The K-pop sample you played at around 3:40 is a bit too loud as it drowns out your voice a bit, and the Black Box song at 7:25 isn't Strike It Up, it's Ride On Time.

Ridd

As for Corona's ability to dodge controversy, I think people cared less because like you said, eurodance artists aren't appreciated for their authenticity. Milli Vanilli, despite being bubblegum pop, were one of the absolute biggest groups in the world in 1989 and won a Grammy for Best New Artist, so they were far more vulnerable to scrutiny than if they had only been a disposable one-hit wonder like Corona was. The lip-syncing also extended to Whigfield, a band which you described as Danish but whose real vocalist was Annerley Gordon, a Brit living primarily in Italy.

Jacqueline Sailer

Awww yeah! I'm very excited for OHW episodes about songs that I remember them from before I moved from Russia to the west. I'm always so pleasantly surprised, "Oh, you guys listened to this, too?"

Alina

For what it's worth, there is currently an Irish band called "The Coronas". Yeah, they're not that thrilled about the current state either.

Paul McA

With regards to the horribly dated Asian stereotypes in Lee Marrow's Italo disco songs, I think he may have actually been roping for the Japanese market than anything else, as Italo disco was so popular in Japan that it not only survived into the '90s but experienced a second life as eurobeat. Since eurobeat has virtually no audience outside of Japan, its songs are absolutely infested with shoutouts and references to Japan, despite being completely produced and sung by Italians. In all fairness though, the two songs you played here are not politically correct even by the mindless standards of eurobeat.

Jacqueline Sailer

Not a one hit wonder, she had Candles In the Rain too.

the purple shaman

"Brand New Key" by Melanie would be a crazy rabbit hole into 70s folk

K

Suggestion for a future OHW: Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand by Primitive Radio Gods.

Only edit hiccup I caught was what looks like an early cut around 10:58

Matsc

i really need a Paper Planes by M.I.A episode

air budd dwyer

That whole clip you showed at 10:16, of Corona on Brazilian television, is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkCKduZriMo

Jon Heiman

This is amazing I'm so pumped to watch this. Last episode was great too.

Suggestions for future OHW's:"Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus, "When The Lights Go Out" by 5ive, and "Turn Up The Radio" by Autograph
