ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Here It Goes Again" by OK Go

Comments

I love this band from the time they appeared. A funny and unexpected clip in the gym on the song Here it goes again. I just stunned with laughter then. It was interesting to watch it again. Well done guys!

In 2010, I was the color guard coach for a small-town marching band. During a particularly stressful time that season, I stumbled upon OK Go's video featuring a marching band (dressed in the same color uniforms as my band) telling me to let it go, this too shall pass. I cried and cried, and I have gratefully enjoyed their art ever since. They are a delight performing live in small venues, and I even got to speak to Damian after their show in my town some years ago and tell him how his music saved me during a difficult time.

Damian Kulash's college demos were a lot more Pixies unhinged guitar weird-as-hell lyrics-y... i uploaded a collection of demos onto youtube years and years ago like the superfan i am. here's the link to one of my faves if you're interested in that pre-first album sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDVbRcSi2Ys

This seems really ridiculous but this is probably the most important song ever for me in terms of my music fandom. I loved pop music in the early 21st century but got totally burned out and jaded not long after. Then one morning in 2006 we flick the TV over to what could best be described as an alternative music countdown show, halfway through the show, right when this song started playing. If it had been anything else we'd probably have just flicked over quickly, but it was my first time seeing the video and it blew me away. I had to keep watching to see what was deemed higher than this on the list, and though the videos never matched OK Go's, it was like discovering this world of music that had been tucked away from me and I've been obsessed with music ever since. Also "Get Over It" rules. It blew my mind when I learnt it was an OK Go song.

The marching band video is *delightful*, possibly my favorite of theirs. The production quality might be a little higher but it still feels like a real labor of love.

Seems like they went full Pillows post HIGA.

Never expected Todd to cover OK Go on here. I saw he had a new video and I was hoping somebody requested Marcy Playground.

Think I know them more as the group that did the theme song to a podcast I used to listen to (don't recall which one offhand). That and their Writing's on the Wall video. hadn't seen the others till now, but looks like I've got my queue for the weekend now :-)

Hmmm, was hoping for a "I Got Five On It" One Hit Wonderland to tie into Us. Will take what I can get.

I heard "Here It Goes Again" on the radio quite a bit.

I wonder if EMI dicked them over with the YouTube embeds because they dicked EMI over with the last track of the album Here It Goes Again comes from: a 35 minute track consisting of nothing but the girlfriend of one of the members sleeping. The reason? To keep EMI from putting Copy Control on the album. No, seriously, when I found that out I immediately bought the album and wondered why we never gave this band more attention... without actually listening to any of the material (or watching the later material, even; I didn't know their videos were still popular!) This answers that question, I guess... oh well. Maybe I'd like it... we'll see. I have a backlog of albums to get to before Oh No, and a backlog of other albums still before I ever get to another album of theirs (should I ever get one).

I have never clicked to a Todd video faster than this one. OK Go's videos are fan-fucking-tastic even if, yes, the music doesn't have the same level of kickass. One tidbit to add in about "This Too Shall Pass" was that the Rube Goldberg video was actually the second video for that song. The first one was a live video with the Notre Dame marching band. Apparently it was taken down at some point, but OK Go put it back up just a few weeks ago.

Ahhhh, OK Go... A perfectly OK group. But seriously, I enjoy their stuff. I got into them after their FIRST video for "This Too Shall Pass" (a video with the Notre Dame marching band which I, as a HS band geek, ate up waaaaaaaaaaay too much). Nothing really stands out about them, but I don't think they really have a bad single either. If they come up in my playlists, I won't skip them, but I'm not actively seeking to buy their latest stuff. Keep doing you. You go, OK Go! (Also, FYI, it would be a compliment to call Imagine Dragons "generic." OK Go at least has energy to their songs)
