POP SONG REVIEW: "Happier" by Marshmello & Bastille

Comments

Well, if no one else got that Homestar reference in the description - Just know that I did. Gonna chill with a cool glass of Melonade now.

You need to give us that think piece as a new video, this week.

Ron G

I know! I didn’t see that coming but it was great!

Ron G

Excellent seasonal timing on the endcap song.

A. M.

Thinkpiece!

I'm still sad that Spotlight didn't end up a hit. Not just Marshmello's best song, but it's tied for my favorite song of the year.

Weird to see Marshmello pretending to play the guitar and drums over a synthesizer and drum machine. Is there even a guitar being played in this song anywhere? I honestly can't tell.

Aw, I love that you brought up, "Just to See You Smile".

I mean, about half the time you see a dog in popular media, it's going to end up the way the video does, so I'm not sure why it would be a surprise at this point.

Daniel Beckett

I am SHOOK with righteous indignation about the dog reveal in that video and I may never forgive Bastille

So you're admitting you made a mistake putting "Closer" at #1? Glad to hear it, that song easily gets on my worst songs of all time list, right next to "Royals"(seriously fuck that pretentious up it's own ass piece of shit song).

LifeIsStrange

I long for the return of the aggressive walls of sound like 'Into You' and 'Cool for the Summer'.

Honestly I think this whole lo-fi, subdued trend in pop music all started with Lorde's Royals. And while she eventually branched out, the industry found its comfort zone thanks to EDM.

waywardlaser

I've never even heard of this song until now, that's how out of touch I am with current music trends. I wish we could go back to the days of pop songs that were actually memorable.

LifeIsStrange

Hey! We used to have Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" as our hockey team goal song, that was fun...until this year, when it was changed back to Crowd Chant. Still better than Chelsea Dagger.

Cristina Youngren

The most offensive thing about this song is the video is produced in portrait mode, like some jackass filming vertical video.

I'll be honest, I had my Spotify just playing one day so I heard the SPENCE remix of this song before the original and... well I was really disappointed when I heard the original thing. The remix sped it up a tad, added a more peppy beat, and just generally made it all cheerier. Listening to the original just depresses me and that d*mn dead dog didn't help change that like wtf? Nobody wants to see that, ever.

AstarothLuLz

And not to post three different times when it's unnecessary but yeah I'm doing that: I always love hearing you compare trends and songs to country music from the late 90's, early 00's. I also basically only listened to country during that time frame so it's nice to see someone hold credence to a lot of those songs.

Josh Spicer

And in a fit of irony, Calvin Harris and, in some aspects, David Guetta--the originators of EDM in the pop mainstream--have both gotten a lot better in avoiding drops and actually making songs that sound like songs.

Josh Spicer

TIL, Tigerstar is a fan of Todd

Honestly this song is pretty much made off the video alone.

Josh Spicer

6:45 I see what you did there.

MJS

I guess your opinion of this song kinda mirrors mine for the song Florence Welch did with Calvin Harris, Sweet Nothing. I mean, when you listen to the verses and such, it sounds like a Florence + The Machine song, but the song gets ruined when Calvin Harris blasts his EDM beats in it. So I guess like what you say with this, the drop really doesn’t help that song either. But I will say, I do like this song a lot more than Sweet Nothing. I do kinda see your point with this, but I’m at least glad that Bastille are out of the one-Hit wonder doghouse. Funny how you mentioned in your Pompeii review that they were almost guaranteed to get another hit (while jokingly making a One-Hit Wonderland template for it), and they did!

Tom Carter

tbh im just glad that marshmello put bastille and miranda cosgrove back into the limelight

Loeko

...did you just make a reference to the Casey Kasem meltdown? That's amazing and made my nerdy day. God bless you Todd.
