ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Wherever You Will Go" by The Calling

Comments

hey, been binging all of your vids the last weeks. they're awesome. If I could do a request for one hit wonder (one album wonder in this case) I would like to see a throwback to alanis morissette. Her album was just so immense and still super popular to this day. would like to hear your thoughts

I recall him being used as a stand-in model for grown-up Draco in certain fandom circles back in the day because of his too-prettiness. Also I remember being very fond of that Santana song when it hit, but I never noticed they replaced Chad with Alex at some point.

A little off topic, but I'm kind of curious about Todd's hypothetical ballot/takes on other ballots for this: https://slate.com/culture/2018/10/new-american-songbook-ballots-complete-list.html

The Stokes are way too good to deserve being compared to this terrible song in any way.

Gordon Stearns

This song certainly falls into the same category of retail establishment ear torture as the last pop song you reviewed, "Girls Like You". It's completely awful, but lyrically harmless, which probably explains why it stuck around while the band who made it immediately disappeared, just like "The Reason".

Thomas Carmody

Yeah, brace yourself Todd for a flurry of comments from random Australians when this hits YouTube

Kylie

Silverchair became a great band fyi.

I always saw this as the rough grunge rock equivalent of the country song "If Tomorrow Never Comes". That kind of theme is pretty common in the country genre, but rare in alternative, so I figured that was the entire reason for its success. Plus, come on, that "light the shadows on your face" line was pretty good.

I remember this song... For being in a million movie trailers.

Matthew

... wait, this isn't a Nickelback song?

Daniel Beckett

Let's call this the unofficial 6th One Hit Wonderland Spooktacular Edition

Ultranatic Productions

Didn't know Joffery Lannister had a band.

RaggedyGuy

The Swedish Girl band Play was kind of like that, they were the opposite of Flo-Rida in that their albums sold really well, but they didn't really have any massive hits

LifeIsStrange

I thought that Cleopatra show was alright.

Oy, that holy trinity of late 90's/early 00's(Kryptonite, Hanging By A Moment, and Everything You Want) rock really brought me back... Makes me also think about those groups that everyone forgets about, but aren't one-hit wonders either. Call it maybe, one-album wonders? I find those groups generally more fascinating than one-hit wonders. One hit wonders often tend to be flukes, but one album wonders imply that at least SOME sticking power was there, for better or for worse. It would be interesting to see how groups could sustain success for a brief period of time, but not replicate the results before or after that.

Terrence Kuhns

Chad Kroeger is a damn good vocalist and way more talented then this little shit.

LifeIsStrange

OMG I love Full Moon films! Too bad some of Charles talent did not rub off on Alex.

LifeIsStrange

DHT would be an interesting one, as they are AFAIK the only trance band to have a top 40 hit in the U.S. Also the most recent OHW i'd like to see Todd do is Orianthi-According to You, I was surprised to hear that song on both pop and rock stations. When searching for OHW for the 2000s, i'm really annoyed at how many lists feature artists that are clearly not one hit wonders, such as Sean Kingston and Ashlee Simpsons, both of whom had multiple top 40 hits. Of course we cannot forget the ultimate OHW from the 2000s-Stacy's Mom(sadly Rachel Hunter who portayed the mom passed away recently) There's also Leona Lewis-Bleeding Love, another one I keep hearing on the radio, for the longest time I thought that song belonged to someone else like Katy Perry or Kelly Clarkson, it certainly does not sound too far removed from their material. From the U.K. there was BBMak, “Back Here” Then there's the song that quickly became a joke- Daniel Powter-Had a Bad Day. There's the one that almost got requested-James Blunt "Beautiful" For rap there was Terror Squad-Lean Back and Mims-This is Why i'm Hot and J-Kwon Tipsy. One of my favorites is from the criminally overlooked girl band "Dream" "He Loves You Not" Then there's Kevin Lyttle, “Turn Me On” , which most people probably know from it's use in Vines. Various other OHW of the 2000s: Gnarls Barkely-Crazy Blu Cantrell-Hit em Up Style Bo Bice-Inside Your Heaven Cassie-Me and U Lou Bega MAMBO NO. 5 (A LITTLE BIT OF...) Lil Romeo-My Baby Lumidee NEVER LEAVE YOU - UH OOH, UH OOOH! Youngbloodz feat. Lil Jon DAMN! Fort Minor feat. Holly Brook WHERE'D YOU GO Samantha Mumba GOTTA TELL YOU Cassidy feat. R. Kelly HOTEL Macy Gray I TRY Vanessa Carlton A THOUSAND MILES Hinder-Lips of an Angel Ruff Endz NO MORE Rich Boy feat. Polow Da Don THROW SOME D's Nick Lachey WHAT'S LEFT OF ME Tweet OOPS (OH MY) Hurricane Chris A BAY BAY Jibbs CHAIN HANG LOW Sonique IT FEELS SO GOOD DJ Sammy & Yanou feat. Do HEAVEN Eden's Crush GET OVER YOURSELF Truth Hurts Feat. Rakim ADDICTIVE Kevon Edmonds 24/7 S Club 7 NEVER HAD A DREAM COME TRUE Young Dro feat. T.I. SHOULDER LEAN

LifeIsStrange

Yeah man I'm sorry but Alex Band is like one of my all time favorite singers from this to "Why Don't You and I" to "Tonight".

Josh Spicer

Was there an editing screw up at 14:55? I can't tell if the lines are supposed to suggest a song should be playing...

Alan Kase

Holy shit, Cleopatra 2525! The worst syndicated genre show of the 90s!

Joe G

Good ol four chords

waywardlaser

You know i've heard this song on the radio so many times and I never once realized what it was called or who played it.

LifeIsStrange

As a huge fan of Alex Band in all capacities (and as a guy who's been wanting this since the show started [that and "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks ONE DAY TODD]) I applaud the decision to whoever requested this.

Josh Spicer

I mostly remember this song from the MADTV sketch where Eddie Vedder and Ray Charles beat up this dude and the dude from Creed.

MJS

I'm really excited to see what other 2000s artists are down the line.

Isaac Jackson

I swear I used to hear that Days of our Lives song all the time. My mom really loved this one terrible soft rock station and we would always listen to it during dinner.
