POP SONG REVIEW: "Thunder" and "Feel It Still"

Oooh oooh, I'm a rebel just for cash now.

POP SONG REVIEW: "Thunder" and "Feel It Still"

Comments

Really great episode, I would love to see more episodes in this vein.

Max Eliaser

Suddenly I'm questioning if my affection for I Feel It Still has more to do with the fact that I first heard it on WXPN, which is University of PA's public radio station, so it had more authentic cred to me. Also... it does make me dance a lot.

Deanna Banana

@12:00 Metric <3 I don't believe I've heard them in a commercial, yet. Although, I know they have a couple tracks in a few movies.

I will forever associate YA MAKE ME A YA MAKE ME A BELEEEEEEVA BELEEEEEEVA with the Switch

Your concerns addresses the norm here in Sweden. As the Artist Grants got put in the trash by the centre-right government a decade ago, if you can't fill a stadium or a festival (sponsor-heavy, mind you), your agency as an artist is little to none. A band I know (Dismissed) is is tied to a filthy brand named Stureplan now because the only way they could get glimpse of an off-city attention is by participating in Melodifestivalen, which is our annual selection to Eurovision Song Contest.

Emanuel Alfredsson / Lemanic

Oh wow, you're reviewing a song I actually listen to. I'm really glad the first time I heard Feel It Still for the first time as a music interstitial on Risk! podcast. That's where I hear most new music these days, podcasts.

De

Same, ive become that guy with the vinyls.

Mike Isasi

I liked this episode. It's a nice change of pace to analyze how music is used for other than simple listening.

I don't watch commercials or pay attention to any that sneak by (I don't watch broadcast TV anymore), so I didn't notice any of this (I hadn't seen any of those commercials until you put them into your episode). When I listen to the radio, it is satellite radio on 80's, Dance, or Radio Classics channel (which is awesome for long drives listening to old dramas and comedies). I think the first time I heard Radioactive was a cover by Pentatonix + Lindsay Sterling which I think is better than the Imagine Dragons version. Steam Powered Giraffe version of Rhianna's Diamonds is better than her version too. Their version is the first version I heard of that song as well. Also, many commercials used "indie" music since almost the begining since it is cheaper. Regarding paying for music, the last few times I bought music was directly from the artist either in person or from their site (or another site/service that serves them).

"Think about it, when was the last time YOU paid for music?" *glances warily at the collection of physical media taking over my living room*

protondonor

You MIGHT have heard Radioactive in The Host.

Matthew

Neat, I was wondering when you'd make a video on the topics you wrote about in your Digital Media News article. I'm so grateful there's Patreon, especially when I read about how turbulence in digital advertising and youtube management playing hell with people who depend on them for solvency.

Brett

Maybe I'm just a plebe commoner to many a music listener... but Feel It Still I love because it makes me jam. I appreciate what you said but first and foremost that song just makes my two left feet dance.

I don't watch sports or much TV at all(if I do watch TV shows, it's on my PC with Adblock turned on) so i've never noticed.

LifeIsStrange

I don't watch commercials anymore so I did not notice this trend.

LifeIsStrange

I’m watching this on an iPad Pro. So.... And honestly, I’m glad Walk The Moon are one hit wonders. I hated Shut Up And Dance. I tried listening to it again but still does nothing for me. It’s still bland and boring and I hope Walk the Moon walks off this planet. But I did like Radioactive even when it was overplayed but yeah wtf Imagine Dragons? Just dull now.

Yvette

As someone who never liked indie rock to begin with, the infection of it on my TV while I'm watching the Saints is getting really suffocating

Andrew Lenahan

For another value of "drop off", I really, really wish they hadn't.

Teddy Haines

I'm watching this on a Microsoft Surface while my Mac updates, and I assure you it possesses none of the qualities of thunder. :/

Meowlissa

Why do you need rock stations when you can stream rock radio? Also, everyone- support your favorite bands, buy their album, see them in concert. The only way to stop this is to actually pay for music

Petty Officer No Class

I hate Imagine Dragons. Wish they would have dropped off after Radioactive

Petty Officer No Class

It's too bad that Todd doesn't get money for showing all those ads.

Ryan Rowekamp

Having viewed this video on Patreon, I feel meta-textually included in the video's thesis, which actually heightened my enjoyment of the video. (I don't imagine [dragons] I used any of those words correctly.)

Alina

Am I the only one who think Thunder was supposed to have a tie in with the Thor movies? Just the look of one of the contortionist makes me think of Dark World and well...Thunder God?

Demolition man was once again correct at predicting the future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVYArjS-Ee0 (sort of)

Same here

I get “Sorry! This video will be available for viewing shortly.” and nothing else happens after that.

All good things comes too an end the moment someone decides to be greedy. Especially Imagine Dragon; they have relentlessly sold all their songs to advertisers from the very start of their career. So much so that they, in my head, just became the 'Ad band' from a very early point. I find it very hard to listen to them without images of some ad flashing in my head, which just shows how effective that form of marketing is.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm happy to live in New Zealand if it means I'm not being bombarded with ads all the damn time.

Grace

i'm not gonna go to your patreon u fucking corporate shill

Will Seamon

Was the "Hipster Point" slide supposed to be an overlay?
