I still don't quite understand why you conclude that the elevation of the evil dude to Sultan must have meant an actual, metaphysical change happening. As opposed to just the perception of the people around him changing. Because he considers himself a "true" Sultan, but Aladdin a fake? That's just him being a narcissist. Because the guard should have been able to "see through" it and not fall for it? Power is often bestowed by power (e.g. leader of a country appointing a minister) and the guard just witnessed a being of proven supreme power declaring that it be so. Seems convincing to me.
