ya also after that, whitebeard hugging him and professing his unconditional love for him and every1 r his sons to him no matter who they r, is a much harsher punishment, when u punish urself with guilt and heartache its much worse than any physical punishment and reprimand. because when u feel u deserve it and they love you so much that they wont punish u and just continue showing u they love you u no matter what it just feels even worse. :( <3

The action he did was pretty dumb but he was obviously loyal for a very long time but this battle and having his crew possibly getting wiped out again like against Roger just put doubt in his mind. His loyalty to his underlings made him vulnerable at a crucial time.
