Mini-Episode 33: Modern (Awful) Trends in Native American History

In recent years, popular books about Native American history have done an awful job peddling to the public a highly inaccurate, and borderline racist portrayal. In this episode, I put my 24 years of teaching Native American history to good use, and show you how readers may not be able to tell the difference between entertaining lies and real history.

Thank you so much! Very appreciated!

You need to rename this show Daniele on Fire!! Your takedown of poorly written “historical” Native American books had me laughing out loud. I read Empire of the Summer Moon and it didn’t pass the smell test because I’ve been listening to you for years. (Thanks, Professor!) I seriously have appreciated your podcast over the years. It’s been informative, interesting, humorous and always entertaining.

So many people liked Empire. Given how poorly researched that is, it's sad

I was reading Apache Voices by Sherry Robinson in the doctor's office the other day and one of the RN's saw it and excitedly told me about Empire of the Summer Moon. Thank you for not only your solid information on this and other subjects, but thank you also for providing references as you go. Oh yeah, and thanks for saving me $20.

When I first "discovered" HoF I was living outside of Philadelphia and I fell in love with your history of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Since then, I have moved to rural North-Central Minnesota and I have really appreciated all of your episodes regarding the native peoples of this place. It has helped me find my way to connecting with my new home that would have been difficult without.
