Mini-Episode 32: Bella Ciao

To say that the song Bella Ciao is famous would be the understatement of the century. Not only it’s one of Italy’s most well-known songs, but it has also been translated in just about every language you can think of—from Tagalog to Yiddish, from Tibetan to Kurdish—and it has been covered by artists all over the world. It has transcended its relevance to Italian history and has been embraced as a hymn of resistance to tyranny by people across the globe. For a long time, the official story has been that Bella Ciao was a song sung by Italian partisans fighting against Fascists and Nazis during WWII. As we’ll find out in this episode, the story is a bit more complicated and there are more questions than answers. We’ll look at the mythology of Bella Ciao and unravel its complicated history. As a bonus, I finish the episode talking about the clash between history and mythology at the roots of another stunningly beautiful Italian song, Albinoni’s Adagio. Or, was it really created by Albinoni?

History on Fire

Wow I come from a family with both maternal and paternal grandparents from Italy. Imperia in the Liguria region and Cervinara in Avellino Province. They are gone but we have one Aunt still alive who was born and raised in Italy. I.came across this song last week on Amazon and I asked Zia Victoria about it. While Daniele has much info to offer here she pretty much echoed some of the main points that he has made.
