New video incoming and it's about the star war. i am sorry

New video will be live at the above link once it is done processing! [EDIT: live version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTJIk5PkTXg]

Thanks folks. Bit of a lighter video this month, and I feel a little bad about that! Apologies. I have to make an easier one every so often to keep the ol' spirits up. Don't wanna stare into the abyss too long

As usual, let me know you notice any mistakes. I thought of a couple of jokes to put in while i was checking it through prior to upload so the live version might be a little different

Next up I'm working on a big video project about racism! What a hook, there. It's probably the most ambitious video in terms of research that i've done so far, & i'm really excited about it! Expect that sometime in the next few weeks

Thanks for your support, as always

error spotted: i call ben solo ben kenobi. wah. too many bens. i'll fix that for the live version

I really disliked The Last Jedi, and even read the novelization of it. Personally, I found it to cross a very important line that I feel is necessary when telling a story in an alternative universe, which is adherence to the understood rules. The writers created a problem, told the audience about the problem, made no indication that the solution was available (even going so far as to let multiple support ships be destroyed without a fight), and then changed the rules at the last moment in a way that was never even outlined as a possibility. This kind of abrupt rule change feels insulting to the viewer, as how else are we to understand the difficulty of problem solving in a world if the rules are volatile?

I like how you ended by subtley suggesting that the obsessive nerdlings that howl about Star Wars being ruined are themselves responsible for the worst tendencies of the franchise (e.g., fan pandering, endless backstory, meticulous attention to excruciating minutiae, every character in a vast universe being inexorably connected to every other character you ever see on screen, etc.)

May the force be with you. Or is that from Startrek? 😬 I let myself out now

literally the one video ive ever wanted to make, and you covered pretty much all the points i had except some of my criticisms of the film lol. great stuff mate.

Looking forward to your next awful video. Life is simply too nice and easy, I say.

i love this

I think your criticism is not misogynistic at all, it is a good point. To me, it actually seemed a lot like TLJ was not so much a film with diverse perspectives - it was a movie that dealt a lot with the white male perspective of coming to terms with diversity. The Poe/Holdo arc was more explicit at this, but as you said, Rey also sometimes felt more like a "pawn in Luke's more interesting character arc". I think it is important to remember that having a lot of powerful women in your movie is not the same as showing a female perspective. Nonetheless, I liked the movie.

I have never seen the star war but am nonetheless excited to watch this

I have to say. That switcharoo with the Nazi review of the original series... that was pretty epic :-)

"So allow me to give you my fan theory... Hm..." Shaun, you are a delight. Also thanks for all the ammo to use against my friends WHO ARE WRONG ABOUT THIS MOVIE

Nichtschwert

I agree, I really love that too. But it is also a thing that I have seen some people complain over, that he don't fight...

Reutermo

I enjoy your light-hearted media opinions, and am happy to report that we agree on TLJ.

I don't know if this is worth adding, but I like the fact that Luke actually "wins" (in that he buys times for his friends to escape) without fighting. It's a callback to Obi-Wan ("There are alternatives to fighting") and Yoda ("Your weapons...you will not need them") and how a Jedi wins without violence. Luke was never there, never actually fighting, never actually engaging in violence. He just used his power to fool Kylo Ren into lashing out violently at nothing...and through that, failing.

He plays on twitch and they upload them to Shaun and Jen live on youtube

appletreepear

i admit i'm a little disappointed, but i'm looking forward to that next one.

Hey Shaun, I'm sorry if you've answered this question before but do you play video games with your fans? I'm friends with you on steam but you never seem to be on.

Benzylmorphine

This is a bad video, but I am glad you at least apologized.

I think my problem with the way Ray's abilities were handled wasn't that she had skills that she shouldn't have, but that she had wisdom that she shouldn't have. And the reason it bothers me isn't just because it's a logical hole, but because it gets in the way of an interesting character arc - it feels like she's already at the end of it without having to do any work to get there. I actually had no problem with all the things she was able to do in The Force Awakens, that was fine. But in The Last Jedi, she's the one who provides wisdom to Luke, rather than the reverse, which is just... unsatisfactory? It makes a bad parallel to The Empire Strikes Back - whereas there, Luke is irrational and thinks with his emotions and he has to understand Yoda's more mature wisdom the hard way, it seems in The Last Jedi like Ray already has that mature wisdom, and it's Luke who needs to understand it. It makes Ray a less interesting main character - we don't get to watch her fail and learn a hard lesson about herself or about the world the way we did with Luke, because she's already wise from day one. To me, she felt less human and interesting because of that - more of a pawn in Luke's more interesting character arc. Which, given that she's the main character, is the exact reverse of how it should be. I haven't see the movie since it was in theaters, so I could be forgetting about plot elements that make this reading too simplistic, but that's why I wasn't a fan of how she was written. I hope that's a more nuanced, less misogynistic criticism than just calling her a Mary Sue because she can use the force well.

Great video! Did notice some things though. When you show the stormfront review you say it is a review of the original trilogy, when it is actually a review of the prequel and the original trilogies. Just a tiny nitpick there. The more important issues is that when you are listing great scenes at the end you fail to mention the scene where Chewbacca eats a porg while its friends and family look on in horror.

also, I was really hoping you were going to address RedLetterMedia directly because their half in the bag about the film is awful and one of their worst

RubbishBinMan

Hell yes, that movie was AMAZING.

Tobasco da Gama

i spotted that myself right after uploading. doh! i'll fix that line in the live version. thanks

Shaun

what an amazing video. I may actually cry from laughing. worth noting, when talking about Ben Solo, you called him Ben Kenobi.

Anathema

at about 19 minutes you said ben kenobi instead of ben solo. im assuming this is a mistake

RubbishBinMan

All I feel the need to add is that the hyperspace collision scene is epic.

Liam Skoda

Gauntlet thrown for Hbomb, that was cute and made me laugh. Nice job.

of all the things we could possibly strongly disagree about, shaun, i'm glad that it's this also—who knows, maybe you'll change me ol mind some

Arben

Hey Shaun. I'm assuming you won't make another video on solo, but do you think you'll discuss it on stream?

It's good Shaun. I'll still support you. You do good work. 🙂

can't wait to watch you talk about my personal favourite war of the stars

No need to apologize I too love this particular war.

Garrett Mitchell

TLJ is good imo, yes

Peter Coffin

Thanks Shaun, looking forward to it!

Ellie L

nope! i also have not seen solo yet

Shaun

For those of us who haven’t seen Solo yet, are there any spoilers? If there are I will hold off watching it until after.
