My Home Was A House

In this episode Columbo is investigating a book publisher played my one of my favorite TV villains, Jack Cassidy. Aaaanyhow, Columbo is in the publishing office and on the wall was a poster that says “My Home Was a House”, with a sexy female silhouette on the cover. I was immediately like, Nooooo Wayyyy! It was a nod to the book “A House Is Not A Home”. A best-selling 1953 autobiography.
“was a major site of New York City underworld activity from the 1920s through the 1940s. Adler's notorious Lexington Avenue house of prostitution functioned as a sort of social club for New York's gangsters and a variety of other celebrities, including Robert Benchley and his friend Dorothy Parker. According to one New York tabloid, it made Adler's name "synonymous with sin."”
A House Is Not a Home was made into a movie in the 1960s—with Shelley Winters as Adler. This book was an important book in women's studies and understanding immigration history.
It was a moment that made me love Columbo even more. For a detective, he was awful friendly to strippers and sex workers. He had a pretty progressive attitude on the subject, often humanizing characters who were in the life. In fact, there is a theory that Columbo represents God in the series. Well, actually Goddess… someone on Reddit made a case for him being a male representation of one of The Furies. I’m not sure how accurate that is but it’s an interesting thought.

I’ve watched Columbo through once and I’m sure I will again. I bought this book a few years ago and coincidentally, it’s signed by Adler exactly 70 years before you made this post: Jan 5, 1955.

2025-01-06 01:19:12 +0000 UTCWatch Columbo when i was a kid with my parents. Loved the character. All the bad guys and girls thought they were smarter than him and he always proved them wrong. To this day still my favorite detective. Oh and I also hated Jack Cassidy. He always played a villian that thought hecwas smarter and better than everyone else.
