Stripping history time! Class is in session folks. Why is it that we connect more to the vintage we buy when it has a story that goes with it??? History of course!! Story telling, just like sex work, is one of the oldest traditions in human history. For the majority of time the history that we had to cling to, everything that we knew about our ancestors and the beginning of things was passed down orally. Sharing knowledge is a selfless act of love and rebellion. Educating yourself and others has been at various points in humanity a dangerous and necessary act. Knowledge is special too because it cannot be taken from you and it can always be expanded upon! So when we receive these items and they have a story it takes them out of the realm of superfluous, abstract goods and makes them a real, tangible expression of history. There are so many stories of people going to thrift stores, charity shops, vintage auctions, yard sales, estate sales, dumpster diving and picking and finding an item that was seemingly unimportant or valueless and it ends up being an incredible piece of history! I remember a story recently about a painting bought at a donation center in Canada for $4. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the painting was an original David Bowie. Talk about one person’s trash being another’s treasure! I guess what I’m saying is when we find the humanity and history in the objects around us they become so much more than the junk we fill our lives with. We can put those items in a place and time, give them context and meaning, and breathe life into their bones. It’s magic. ✨ 🔮 ✨
