The CanCan first appeared in Paris in the 1830's, it was known as a high energy and scandalous performance, giving a show through high kicks and lifting of the skirt. You may know it best from Moulin Rouge.
The Cancan was a call for change - The cancan was a way of fighting against strict Victorian values, particularly for women. At a time when women were not supposed to be out of breath or show their ankles, lifting their legs into the air couldn’t have been more different for women at the time; it was deemed “disreputable” for people to be in such close contact. I purchased this incredible dancing dress from BridgetsCabinet a few years back and can’t wait to repair and house it in the museum.

I love the color of the oranges, pinks and yellows. The accent beads and and applique. All so detailed and delicate yet it’s lasted all these years.
