Road dog diaries, the leaving...

I took these pics yesterday at Córcega beach with my I phone. I sure am gonna miss that view for the next 2 weeks.

It’s important for my mental health to take time to decompress in the mornings so I go to the water.

As I prepare to go pickin on the road tomorrow I’m trying to map out my mornings so that I can still make time for my mental and physical health.

On the road, I’m usually out the door of the hotel by 8am so that means I need to wake up in time to do yoga, eat, take a long bath, get dressed and I put on my makeup in the car because usually Mike or Haley drives. I don’t take time on my hair cuz I suck at hair stuff so normally I wear a bandana or put it up. Most days I’ll wake up at 5am so I don’t have to rush. Rushing is the perfect way to fuck my day from the start. I try to avoid rushing at all costs.

After that We drive anywhere from 10 min to 2 hours to our daily pick. We work anywhere from 10-16 hours and head to the hotel. Often times we get back to the hotel at 9 or 10 at night sometimes later so there is very little sleep on the road, which works for me since I never really sleep for more than a few hours at a time.

Wake up, rinse, repeat.

Every moment of every day on the road is spent researching, buying, filming, problem solving, heavy lifting and ultimately making a show. While I love this process it requires me to treat myself with much care. With our schedule it’s easy to fall into bad habits like over drinking, taking pain meds, sleep meds, stay awake meds, mental stability meds, etc. sometimes these meds are needed but it’s all a balance right, so I try to avoid those addiction traps by caring for my body before it is in pain, therapy in all forms, avoiding foods and alcohol that contribute to inflammation and depression.

Don’t get me wrong I drink and smoke that flower 🌸 and enjoy microdosing with psychedelics as much as the next gal but I try to keep it minimal to nill while I’m working so that I can stay sharp, there are a lot of moving parts and sometimes adulting is unavoidable if you want to continue to enjoy your life and career. Or so I’m learning☺️

This trip I’ll meet with Haley and Robbie and the crew in Memphis tomorrow night, we get to stay at the Peabody to watch the ducks then it’s budget motel city for the next 2 weeks. I actually love budget motels as long as they’re clean.

We will be picking through Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee. I’m hoping to return to my friend Bettie Dobson, owner of the Metropolotin Hotel for an episode.

I love staying here because I learn so much every time, also, I get to bathe in the same bath tub that Tina Turner bathed in while she was touring. Everybody who was anybody stayed there if they were a Black artist, activist or athlete. I’m lucky to have found out about it from a friend who told me it was a great spot to learn about American history through the eyes of Black America.
