Hello everyone! I’m so excited to be welcoming my friend and fellow performer, the Perle Noire to my home in Puerto Rico in December for my birthday showcase. This is a private show that I like to do, family and very close friends only, it’s certainly not a packed audience but it’s my favorite audience and always my favorite performers. We will be mostly housebound to avoid the Rona situation unless we are in the water. Normally the Perle Noire is so busy traveling around the world performing that it’s difficult for me to be able to spend time with her, learn from her, perform with her etc. I have had the opportunity to perform with the Perle Noire on several occasions and each time I walk away with no doubt in my mind that she is indeed The Mahogany Queen of Burlesque. Please take the opportunity to follow her work, follow her social media, check out her website and if you like, take workshops from her! I flew to New York to take a fan dancing class from her last year and not only did it change the aesthetic of my fan dancing greatly, but she definitely kept a little piece of my heart with her as well.
Myself and my Manager Haley landed in New York with plans of meeting up with the Perle Noire for a workshop on fandancing.
We left the hotel in Soho hopped in a cab and found ourselves in the busiest part of Manhattan.
I normally do find myself in the busiest part of Manhattan when I’m in New York because, life stuff… work stuff ... etc.
Manhattan is always a magical place for me. Maybe it started from watching the Muppets take Manhattan when I was little? I don’t know. I’ve always seen Manhattan is a place that I can learn and explore and that I did on this day!
I’m not one to open up emotionally too many people in person. I get this complaint a lot. If I don’t find safety with you, I don’t open up. And even if I do find safety with you, I still find it hard to open up and often times it takes years.
Upon walking into the performing arts building where the Perle Noire‘s studio is, I became flushed with emotion and some anxiety, probably performance anxiety. After all, I’m here to visit the Mahogany Queen of Burlesque. Not only is she going to teach me but she’s also going to see me. I’ve known the Perle Noire for many years and when she sees you, it’s intense! I mean when she truly sees you, it’s like the heavens have opened and inevitably so do I. On that day especially.
I had been wanting to take a more intimate class with her for quite a while but had not felt emotionally prepared to do so given that I am constantly in a flux of emotions. On this particular grey day in Manhattan I finally got a little taste of a truly emotionally interactive class with her.
I recorded this class but sadly the footage is damaged so we are trying to fix it so I can show you at a later date.
Here is Perle’s bio so that you can take a peek for yourself and get enrolled in one of her workshops. It’s an intensely freeing experience that is worth the money and time.
The biggest take away I got from this workshop was the importance of intention. The second take away is that it is ok to be genuinely myself around her. The third takeaway is that it’s beautiful and safe to be big in personality with her. She actually appreciates the intensity.
I’m excited to share more of my journey with my friend Perle in the future. Stay tuned!
