Do you ever notice that when you’re doing something that’s difficult or exciting or nerve-racking... like Paddleboarding or getting on a flight, driving a car for the first time, going on a date, etc, you forget to breathe? I’ve noticed this with myself. And it almost creates a false sense of panic. I have finally learned how to work through that. I breathe! I breathe… I breathe and slowly hold my breath for three seconds and breathe out for three seconds, hold my breath for three seconds, breathe in for three seconds rinse, repeat. Until I no longer feel that sense of urgency and panicked and anxiety. Sometimes our breath tricks us into thinking we are afraid when we are really just excited about life. Some of us deal with extreme anxiety. I do. In those moments I stop what I’m doing. If I can’t stop what I’m doing when I breathe through it. And that is the key to getting through hard situations. Breathe through it. If Something feels uncomfortable, breathe through if something feels scary, breathe through it. If something feels overwhelming use squared breathing and just breathe through it.
If you would like to increase the seconds of square breathing feel free. Sometimes I use three seconds sometimes I use five second increments. Just make sure everything is squared. Breathe in Three seconds. Hold it three seconds. Breathe out Three seconds. Hold it three seconds. Get it? Good! I promise you, if you use this in moments of anxiety it will help calm your nerves. It forces your mind to start thinking about something else, some other action which is breathing. Normally we don’t have to think about breathing, we just naturally do it. In moments of stress, we forget to breathe therefore we need to remind ourselves to calmly breathe. ❤️
