I rarely rewatch these specific episodes because of how much I absolutely hate Holtz and what they do to Connor. It hurts my heart for him. He was so innocent in all this and got so fucked up. I love Connor almost as much as I love Dawn LOL Two little misfit weirdos created by mystical means.
Glad to see you hated it as much as I did LOL

I don't know how many of you have read the "A Song of Ice & Fire" books by George RR Martin (the books Game of Thrones was based on) but they are some of my favourites. There is a famous speech in the 4th book of the series, "A Feast for Crows" delivered by a character called Septon Meribald. It's informally known as "The Broken Man Speech" within the fandom & it's a beautiful piece of writing. Meribald describes the process by which a soldier "breaks" in the course of war. It's a gradual process he says, the path of least resistance that leads you into the darkness till one day you look around & you don't even recognize yourself. Why am I mentioning this ? Well I believe that Holtz is the epitome of the "Broken Man". Holtz apparently began hunting vampires in 1754 & based on his clothing & the fact his men called him "captain", I think Holtz was a former soldier. Now the most likely conflict he could have been involved in would have been the 2nd Jacobite Rebellion in 1745. We see in one episode that he seemed to be associated with an outlaw faction of the Catholic church which suggests that Holtz was a Jacobite & on the losing side of the '45 (as the rebellion is known here in Scotland). Look, if Holtz was on the losing side at Culloden then he saw some pretty messed up shit & I'll leave it at that. My point here really is that Holtz didn't suddenly go mad when his family was raped & murdered but that sure as hell was the final straw that snapped an already breaking man. Holtz is a pawn, a broken & desperate pawn. I can only ever feel pity for him.

The way I see the episode title Benediction is because Holtz is giving his blessing to Connor to be with Angel, even though we know Holtz really has an ulterior motive.
Also, in a sense the title could refer to what Cordy did for Connor which is to somehow use her powers to cleanse Connors soul of the horrible ugliness of Quortoth. Like she is blessing his soul. Kinda like how one would go to a church or one’s spiritual leader to ask for their blessings and prayers.
