Angel 1x21 - full reaction

Hey guys sorry for only posting one Buffyverse reaction a week. I think I might only post once next week as well and then after that I'll be back to the regular two a week.

Angel 1x21 - full reaction

Comments

Nah, it's what Angel said at the end of his conversation with Lindsey near the start of the episode: Lindsey wasn't looking to change as a person, he was panicking about something that was over his personal line. He _thought_ he wanted to change, but he showed no signs of it, no efforts towards it, no remorse or even a _mention_ of anything he'd done in the past as a part of Wolfram and Hart. Faith obviously wanted to be better, she wanted to atone for her actions and change who she fundamentally was as a person to avoid doing more horrible things, and there was no question about that between both her behavior and her actions. But Lindsey just didn't want to step over a line, and Angel saw that. Even the possibility of leaving Wolfram and Hart wasn't about realizing how awful they were and wanting to get out of that life, it was about the specific awful thing he was about to contribute to being too far for him, and leaving Wolfram and Hart being the only way he could see to avoid being a part of that specific awful thing. Basically, Angel cares about people on the dark side who legitimately show signs that they want to come into the light fully, that they don't just want to stop being bad but that they want to atone for what they've done and change, or even better, those who want to try to make the world better in some way. He doesn't care about people on the dark side who haven't shown any desire to change who they are as people or any desire to actively make the world better rather than just stop making it worse. And I'm positive that if Lindsey had gone to Angel looking to get out of Wolfram and Hart because he realized that he was contributing to both systemic injustices on the natural side of things and incredible evils on the supernatural side of things, rather than because he didn't want to be a part of something that involved killing kids but everything else he had done for them for years was just fine, Angel would've been all-in on helping him.

I really hate how Angel (and to some degree Cordelia too) treats Lindsey. Two episodes ago he was all "She's a person. In case you've forgotten, we're not in the business of giving up on people!" But with Lindsey, it looked like he could hardly wait for him to die. I guess Angel only wants to save women. Well, except blind women apparently.

We tend to think of Angel as this paragon of virtue like Buffy. He's not, he was the worst kind of demon for centuries and as evidenced by his little speech about missing the clarity of that evilness I suspect his demon side sits closer to the surface than we might realize. If killing Miss Brewer was the only way to save those children he's fully capable of doing it.
