2021-04-25 21:50:36 +0000 UTCI hate this goddamn episode so much. Yeah, yeah, Buffy is badass, and the scene with the nurse and "I just suck at undercover" are cool. But Joss Whedon is more interested in using the budget upgrade and the new 35mm film (which lacks the spooky nature of the 16mm they used for S1-2) to make a "director's reel" and get feature film jobs than in telling a story. Oh, look, an endless (and pointless) one-take shot. Oh, look, a sad and sappy musical PSA. Oh, look, a big fight scene. Oh, go away. Meanwhile, the time-mechanics of Ken's Interdimensional Toyota Factory (or whatever that is) make no sense (if the kids die in a DAY [our time], he'll never be able to keep up the numbers) and Buffy saves like, what, six people out of THOUSANDS of slaves? Some hero you are, Summers. (And of all the people to save, stupid Lily? Ugh.) And then the portal just closes, for no reason? Gee…convenient, huh? Meanwhile, the group is treated as an incompetent joke, reduced to B-plot status, and not seen after the start of a too-long Act 4. Why isn't Giles patrolling with the kids? He used to see doing patrol when Buffy couldn't as his duty. ("Ted", "BB&B") It's nice to tell Willow "don't die" but since YOU'RE the guy who's PAID to do this job, maybe you should make sure she doesn't? And are we not even going to acknowledge that Xander professed his love for Willow last episode? No, he's all Cordelia, all the time. And what do they do? Argue and then kiss with cheesy music swelling? What, are we back in "Bad Eggs" or something? Didn't we have episodes where Cordelia makes sacrifices to admit she has feelings ("BB&B"), Cordelia demands respect in the relationship…and gets it ("Killed by Death"), and Cordelia shows she cares and will stand by Xander no matter what ("Go Fish"), or was I just imagining those? Meanwhile, Oz repeats an entire year of school just so he can hang around his girlfriend. Gee, I thought ANGEL was the creepy stalker in the group. Is it really that hard to have Oz show up for meetings after school? Lazy hack writing. BUFFY (to Lily, at the end): I'll call and chack up on you. Wait, Buffy had a phone in that apartment? (We never saw it.) So she spent the entire summer with a phone in her room, every night…and couldn't bother to call Joyce and let her know she's alive? (I mean, I hate Joyce, too, but still.) Or Willow? Or Giles? Hell, call Cordy and ask her to apologize to the others if it's too tough to talk to them directly. (You can't tell me Buffy is scared that CORDELIA is hating her.) Very selfish, Buffy. I'm disappointed. As I say, lazy and hacky work. I can't imagine waiting an entire summer for THIS. Blech. (Enjoyed your reaction, though.)
