Buffy season 1 review

My overall enjoyment of season 1 was extremely positive. Buffy grabbed my attention in the first episode and it never let it go. As a first time watcher I really enjoyed season 1. I know season 2 is supposedly a lot better, but so far I’ve been having a lot of fun watching. I mean with editing I have to watch the episodes multiple times and I still love it. There are episodes I definitely liked more than others, but I definitely see why people are still talking about this show today. It has great potential and I for one can’t wait to see where they take it in the coming seasons. I’m especially curious to see how much different season 2 will be with a bigger budget and more episodes.

I don’t have too many predictions for season 2. This season had a pretty conclusive ending, which makes me think they weren’t sure if they were going to be renewed. Like if this is how the show would have ended it, it would have been a satisfying finale. They didn’t set anything up for next season. The only loose end I can think of is the anointed one who just left Buffy in the cave and was never heard from again. I’m not sure if he also died when the Master died, how the creepy monster went back into hell, maybe the kid also disappeared. Or maybe he’ll be back next season.

I’m also not sure how they’re going to handle the big bad for next season, wether it’s going to be one villain for the whole of the season or one big bad for each half of it. I also hope the villain is going to be more fleshed out and has a different goal than just destroying the world. That is such a cliche villain plan. I hope the new one will be even more fleshed out as well. Extra points if the villain is somehow connected to Buffy.

Things I’m hoping to see:

- Angel having more screen time and more development. I would actually love to see a flashback episode of when he got turned into a vampire and maybe when the curse took effect on him. It’d be great to learn more about him. I would also like to see his relationship with Buffy to develop. Even though I know that their relationship is kind of doomed, unless of course they find a cure for vampirism then they could be together forever, I still want them to give the relationship a shot, because they are just so cute together.

- I would actually like it if Cordelia became a part of their team. Not in a significant role or anything, but I do think there’s a lot of potential with involving Cordelia in defeating some of the monsters/vampires. I also hope they keep evolving her character. We saw a tremendous growth to her in episode 11, so I hope they keep that up and keep fleshing out her character.

- Xander and Willow in happy relationships. I either want them to be together or to be finally be able to move on from their unrequited loves. I just want them both to be happy.

- I want to learn more about Giles as well. I love Giles so much and I just wanna learn more about him. I wanna know everything haha

- And finally Buffy. We saw her coming to her own in the finale and finally excepting her role as a slayer. I’m curious to see how that’s gonna change her attitude towards fighting monsters. The biggest thing I’m hoping to see, but probably won’t get, is Buffy dealing with dying. I really enjoy storylines where characters actually are still mentally dealing with terrible things that happened to them, but in most cases it gets forgotten in the next episode, sometimes even the next scene. (this is the reason why one of favourite marvel movies is iron man 3 is because it deals with Tony’s PTSD and panic attacks, because he did almost die and it was nice to see that it was acknowledged) I really don’t know if this would have even been a thing in the 90s but I would love it if this whole ordeal had actually effected Buffy and that we get to see her moving on from this.

Ranking the characters:

#1 - Giles - I just love Giles so much and his love for Buffy and him willing to sacrifice himself for Buffy was too cute.

#2 - Buffy - Pretty much on par with Giles. I love how brave she is and her humour. I love her little puns. And she is just such a badass

#3 - Willow - She is so cute and sweet. She also got way more assertive by the end of the season and is now standing up for herself. Also who doesn’t love a hack queen. A cute lil nerd

#4 - Angel - Even though we don’t know too much about him, he’s a cool character with a really interesting backstory. I can’t wait to learn more about him.

#5 - Xander - I like Xander, but man he can be so annoying sometimes. But he did save Buffy’s life so he is good in my book.

#6 - Cordelia - Actually I have bene enjoying Cordelia these past two episodes, so I’m hoping that will carry on into season 2 as well.

Ranking the episodes:

#11 - I Robot…You Jane - Even though we got introduced to Jenny, it was just kind of a boring episode.

#10 - Teacher’s Pet - Just such an inappropriate episode and also nothing too major storywise has happened.

#9 - Never kill a boy on the first date - Again quite a forgettable episode with not much happening. I do enjoy watching Buffy trying to lead a normal life, but Owen was quite an annoying character.

#8 - The puppet show - Number 8 purely for the great sound design for the voice of the monster and the cool twist of the puppet actually being a good guy. Even though he was kind of a creep.

#7 - Witch - Again had a great twist and we already got some amazing Giles worrying about Buffy moments

#6 - Out of mind out of sight - I’m sorry but I’m still not over that ending lol also yay for the Cordelia development

#5 - The pack - BOOOOOOOOBBBBBBBBB!!!!!!! Also great acting from Nicholas Brendon

#4 - Nightmares - Giles’s and Buffy’s fears! I just can’t with these two!

#3 - Welcome to Hellmouth/The Harvest - a great start to the show and great character introductions

#2 - Angel - I just did not see that twist coming. His backstory is also just so tragic

#1 - Prophecy girl - Just absolute perfection! They really pulled out all the stops for this. The drama of it all!! Loved it so so much!
