FASHIONISTA

The beginning of this year was a real struggle. I’d been downsized out of my job, was having some medical problems, and was suffering some professional setbacks. To add to this, my creative mentor, Performance artist James Luna passed away suddenly, who I’d only seen the month before. I was really not doing well.

Needless to say, I was not feeling creative. Noting held my interest, and I truly didn’t know if I’d ever want to pick up my camera again. I tried to schedule things, but they’d either fall through or I’d cancel them because I just couldn’t bring myself to see them through.

Then, one week, I just forced myself to arrange a shoot. I mustered the strength to set up a massive amount of lighting equipment, colors, etc. And once the model had arrived, I had barely enough energy, physically, mentally, emotionally, to continue to shoot. I was coughing and fevered and exhausted before we even started. But I did continue. I remember sitting on the floor using two hands to hold up the camera.

And somehow, thankfully, the images turned out great. Funky, cool, new, interesting, creative, and for the first time in a long while, I felt as though I could see light at the end of the tunnel. This is part of that shoot.

I hope you can appreciate this shoot a fraction as much as I did at that time. Thankfully I’ve all but completely tackled the feeling of creative hopelessness I was engulfed by at that time. I have hopes and ideas for the future. Stay tuned!
