Hey friends!
As you see in the last video I used 3 sunset lamps for one set on a client shoot. When they came out and I saw those on instagram and amazon I thought ok you can do smth creative with those, looks like fun and pretty nonexpensive too, so I got myself 3 lamps about 1 year ago.
So what do you need to know about a shoot with sunset lamps ?
1. they are not powerful, so you probably shoot at at least 800iso, probably 1600 iso, depending on the lamps and your setting.
2. my lamps are all usb powered, so its easy to plug them in and they are very light, so you can just take one in your hand and adjust during the whole shoot to get different light every shot.
3. get yourself a version where you can change different light settings to be more versatile.
When I did this shoot with pink/purple/blue colors (it was the overall idea for the whole campaign), it was some kind of difficult to me, because the colors I saw through the camera were not completely what i wanted to achieve, and I would recommend to shoot tethered to your laptop and adjust the colors in the beginning of the shoot to see if it is the right setting and you getting the results you wanted. The good thing is - there is plenty of options to adjust the colors of your RAW photos afterwards to get the desired look, so I just had to trust my gut here (and I also did 2 shoots with those lamps in the past and knew that I can adjust colors afterwards pretty well).
In general I would say for me there is no clear approach when shooting with those lamps - its more of "try and find out" way. You start placing one lamp at a time and then adjust during the shoot and try to find a better angle. Because the light is hard shaped, you get clear lines and can use the lamps with mirrors or mirrored surfaces to create different geometrical patterns.
On the "red" pictures with the second model (its a shoot from last year) you can see there is a square mirror on the left side of the model, leaned at the wall. And one lamp is directed to the mirrow to create mirrored circles and lines on the wall :)
