Co-Curricular Activities

I did a couple of single illustrations last month... But man they really didn't hit the spot quite like a good ol'e set does! (Or maybe it's a sign I need to up my game with the single pieces)

It was great fun illustrating a fight scene for real (for once), after the tons of posturing and cool post battle shots. You can probably tell the monster design is still pretty haphazard, but hey, that leaves plenty of room for improvement, and remastering, next time!

Designing the tattoo for the legs was also pretty fun! The wing motif came out of nowhere and I thought it just fit pretty well with a part of the body that's articulated, and also flows with the composition. It's really one of those learning moments that only become accessible when you dive head on in.

The rest of the pieces were definitely more static and ordinary - perhaps I would have liked to do a bit more if I was less busy this past month! (again more improvement space next time :)) Still, I thought it was a fun set to do, and I'd love to hear what you think!

As always, the process videos will come up soon, so please look forward to those - and thank you so much for the amazing support. ♥

Actually I did prepare a quick one this time to talk about dramatic lighting! It's a quicker format, but more structured in steps than the usual commentary, it will be up later today! Thank you :)

GUWEIZ

hi! will we be getting a tutorial soon? i miss learning from you! otherwise, amazing pieces as always!

viha

Okay thanks, working from large to small helps me so I will try to apply it to everything:)

Júlia

It's always an honor to have my work remind people of some classics!

GUWEIZ

Thank you for the kind words, I'm always honored to serve up some nice eye candy for you guys :)! I think with unfamiliar elements, it's good to have some reference to help you decide how exactly you want to do it - after that, work in from the largest elements to the smallest. It's totally OK if you don't get the smallest details and nuances right - that's why I usually anchor these with something else that I'm (relatively) good at!

GUWEIZ

Thank you, that is always really great to hear!

GUWEIZ

Thank you! The pose was surprisingly manageable, but getting the fabric serviceable and moving was tough!

GUWEIZ

Thank you very much as always! There is definitely a bug😂, I flipped the final frame a few times around until I decided to have a left to right. I changed everything but forgot the hand....

GUWEIZ

Thank you! I'd love to explain even more in the video soon:)

GUWEIZ

Thank you so much! It's a difficult fight scene, even with various reference materials (more in the process video!) to draw, so I'm glad things ended up OK!

GUWEIZ

Thank you! It just never feels complete until I get all that detail out of the way :)

GUWEIZ

Thank you! In my mind they're all late 20s early 30s so it's pretty accurate in a way 😂

GUWEIZ

I'm definitely a draw first and think later kind of guy sometimes - in my mind she's probably some kind of late 20s professional who somehow ended up in an odd job that required disguise! As you mentioned, there is a contrast and difference from I and Y, and that's what I was aiming for! Let's see how it goes indeed... I still remember that sketch! I just felt the design was pretty cool, but way to difficult to pull off with that pose (and that it wasn't differentiated enough). Panels 2 and 4 were definitely more of my usual "comfort zone" camera placement and composition - with a relatively static pose. It seems the final frame was quite a good fit this time too! Lastly, I think you can put her in that folder, for now... :)

GUWEIZ

Thank you! That's a really interesting interpretation of the lighting :) I was thinking more of a knocked over camping lamp or something, but your imagination is definitely stronger! I'm glad you liked the clothing folds too, I'm usually pretty bad at those as they really don't come all that intuitively to me, but as long as it's serviceable. I'm definitely not buying anything from that shop either.... I always like these front, easy perspective shots, just that I can't overdo them too often ;] I enjoyed drawing the fourth piece quite a bit as well - usually the 4 pieces of the set come with a pretty tightly grouped color palette, but this time it was nice to change it up! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts as always!

GUWEIZ

Love these! The first one gave me a bit of a giggle because the light seems like a camera flash, so I immediately imagined some kids wandering in a creepy place for a dare, stumbling upon this scene and of course taking a picture instead of running. The whole thing looks amazing! The colors, the light, the flow. You often say you're no fashion artist but your clothing always looks solid with the nice folds, who cares if it's not latest Vogue. x) The third one with dead (I assume) monster is really cool. The character's expression is so nonchalant, she kind of gives a cocky vibe in general and I like that about her. But the entire image is just so fun with color and composition. It's detailed but not too crowded. Still, not gonna be buying meat from that shop The fourth one is so soothing to look at despite all the blood stains. I think it's another one of your stronger skills, conveying mood in a convincing way. There could be apocalypse going on and she'd still look so peaceful.

Matcha Flavoured Frog

She looks more and more like a "bōsōzoku" (deliquent?) female group leader to me, in that school uniform. That definitely gives a different vibes from Irena and Yin. Also because the threat that is "fought" looks different (human bodies vs. more otherworldly creatures... I guess). Let's see how this goes in the future. 😋 It seems the first picture of your set posted on May 27, 2023 (https://www.patreon.com/posts/drawing-is-hard-83624619) is some kind of an initial design attempt. Always interesting to see how things move and evolve. And on this current set, I like panel 2 and 4 the most. The pose, the expression and the fact they are more close-ups really draws me into them. That calm and resting face on the last one is... ❤️Always amazed by what you're creating and posting! Thanks for what you're bringing here!! On a side note, would you consider this to be part of the "Bad Guys" series, or should I put it in a folder with another name? Yeah, plain and stupid question. 😅

Kyp-chan

Wifey material right there, great job!

Neil Pinnock

Absolutely stunned by this set, always always packing in so much detail, incredible stuff as always

Swishy_Pants

These are some amazing pieces, love the composition of these. Love the new character and man the lighting is so good!

Mirabelkowka

I love this set! Battle pose is so dope, looks like a frozen frame from a video! Really, you continue to surprise with how you think and see the world!

Iga

The battle theme is astounding ,the violent battle style really suits her, I really love the second portrait, just so breathtaking !And maybe there's a little bug in the last one , I thought her prosthetic limb is the right arm not the left one. Thanks for the awesome works and really eager to see how Irena and 苂 fight in the future.

Zwei Zhang

So good! Really really like the dynamic flow in the first one!

sisoou

That’s amazing Guweiz !!! You’re getting better each time !!!

Julie Martinez

Oohh every single piece is great!! I wish you could see them in our eyes, just because you can see stuff that is wrong doesn't take away from it being a well crafted piece, visually striking and telling a story! I wanted to ask, how do you pull off stuff that's not your strongest point (like monsters)? I kind of dread incorporating elements that I think I can't draw but maybe I just need to push through? Thanks:)

Júlia

These images remind me a little of the Blood+ or Blood-C manga
