What a fun batch of episodes! I feel like all three of these help us wade into some of the depth these characters really have. Especially Space Race and Island Adventure. We get to see Pearl isn't always the most rational or mindful of others despite her personality, and that the Lars/Sadie dynamic isn't totally one-sided in terms of their weird low-key toxicity. Especially for Sadie, I always felt like this ep makes her WAY more interesting, and she was already a likable character. You don't often get to see female characters make such unmistakably "wrong" choices without them getting totally condemned for it, or they're just never allowed to do anything morally dubious. I'll always appreciate that this show was never afraid to play in the grey areas of interpersonal dynamics. It's a small thing, and a more personal reading, but for anyone else who's seen the entire show, I feel like the song Steven sings in Island Adventure is a surprisingly meaningful one considering the show's overarching themes. Even all the way back here in S1, some core ideas about the show and these characters is starting to shine through.
