The biggest thing about Aang being a “bad dad” is that Aang had a job to do that supersedes his job as da father. Which I would argue is exactly in line with his character, because his number 1 wish was to have his people back. Now he has Tenzin, Kya and Bumi; but only Tenzin cares about air nomad culture. So Tenzin is essentially going on work trips with Aang because he’s ACTUALLY interested, unlike his siblings. And as we saw, Aang is easily distracted. So they were more than likely taking rest stops on the way to and from Aang’s business. And the reason Katara “let it slide” is because Kya and Bumi’s conflict with Aang mirrors Katara’s conflict with Hakoda (her father). “I know we had gran gran and she loved usc but we were just so lost without you” can literally be switched to “I know we had mom (Katara) and she loved us, but we were just so lost without you”. So Katara knows that Aang had a job to do, that Tenzin was simply interested in and directly relevant to that work, and while it was probably going to create unresolved feelings in the other 2 children, it was something that was just going to happen.
