School year in Japan is divided into three parts. They are often called "semesters" in the English translations of anime and manga. Sometimes they're called "terms", which is probably a more appropriate translation. Part 1 goes from April till the summer holidays begin. Part 2 starts after the summer holidays and finishes on Christmas Eve. (Like in this episode here.) After the New Year holidays, the part 3 begins, and it lasts lasts perhaps somewhere until the middle of March, and after that they have the spring holidays. (Also, between April and May there is that famous "Golden Week" where they have a whole week of various national holidays.)
