The afterimages work most effectively on enemies with good vision. The translators also made a small mistake in Tanjiro's flashback. He used Dance, not Flame Dance. Although they are pronounced the same (Enbu), the Kanji for writing them is different. Dance is also a one hit attack (he used it against Rui as well, and in the flashback he was transitioning it to Clear Blue Sky, which he used against Enmu), while Flame Dance is a 2 hit combo as he showed here.
