Part One: Should I Monitize My Art?

Hey there loyal friends. <3

So I've been thinking a lot about this lately and I'm not really sure what I want to do. I thought turning to you maybe I could get some insight. You probably don't know this about me but, well we all have aspirations right? Kinda like a Sim from the sims games right? lol Well my aspiration is wealth.. something I'm not doing too good at thus far. : / I grew up in poverty so it goes without saying that part of me longs to do better then my parents and maybe even be able to give something back to them and make them proud.  Just because we were poor didn't mean they didn't do everything they could to raise me you know? I dream someday of having a nice big house and letting them come over and visit, or maybe buy my mom a car lol..

Anyway aside from all that I've been putting a lot of thought into what someone needs to do when they're aspiring for wealth, and one of them is to have as many passive incomes on the side as possible.

For the longest time my patreon hasn't been a big thing or anything, more of a passive tip-jar or something for people who really appreciate the admittedly unique kind of art that I do and want to support it and encourage me. (thanks again btw <3)

Most of my time drawing car erotica I've had the mindset that I shouldn't put any of my art behind a pay-wall because what I'm doing is a service, it's my way of supporting and giving something to the Objectum-Sexual community and it's growing numbers. I know how hard it can be to find truly erotic pictures of cars just from 'normal people places' so I saw myself as supplying material for my folks.. you know?

However the one rule of humanity is, few people are going to pay for something they can get for free. I see people like Meesh https://www.patreon.com/Meesh for example who puts almost everything he makes behind a paywall and while he doesn't display his income.. the amount of patrons he has makes it clear he's making bank..

So it's got me thinking... should I put my art behind a paywall if it means I'll get more patrons? I figured if I did I wouldn't put any of the stuff already out behind the wall but just everything going forward. Honestly as bad as it makes me sound, the biggest thing I'm afraid of with doing this is that I'd hardly get any feedback on my work. I mean no one is going to feel like I deserve feedback or comments on my art if they're paying for it you know?

I just don't know... how do you guys feel about this? I guess in the end it WOULD give you guys more value for your dollar..

can you give me an example of "extra nice stuff?" I don't really know what it's like being on the audience side of things..

Half-Dude

pretty interesting idea.. if you weren't a patron would a really juicy drawing be the difference for you deciding to become one just because the payed version is color/shaded? I figured even the B/W version would be enough to satisfy most people..

Half-Dude

lol well I know that! Just because I can do something doesn't mean its the right thing to do..

Half-Dude

the thing is if you put it behind a paywall you wont get any additional viewers, if you dont you wont get paid. something you could do is put the "more effort" content behind the paywall and just post the sketched/inked versions while the coloured/more detailed versions of that is behind the paywall, that way your art is still out there and but the "paying customers" will get the full experience.

I think you should only put some art behind a paywall, like... Think a patreon reward, some extra nice stuff once or twice a month exclusively for patrons, but I don't think you should have all of your future art paywalled. It makes me sound like a dick saying this, but if you make all of your stuff going forward paid content, you're going to lose most of your followers...

Do whatever you think would be best, because last I checked nobody can tell you what to do.
