How Far Is Far Enough?
Added 2019-07-20 17:35:58 +0000 UTCI've got a question for you, my loyal patrons, and I want you to be honest. I've been thinking about it a bit lately...
My roomate, a fellow mech, talks to me about my art now and then. Over and over he tells me that I put too much time and effort into my art most times, that I could have drawn up to a point 1/4 into the overall time spent on the picture and it would have been just as well received as the finished product.
Obviously if a picture is a passion thing for me I want to do it the best I can, but I realize that I do have a pretty strong completionist compulsion to me when it comes to art.. even if it's just art that's essentially just porn.. as funny as that is.
Basically he'll point at some of his favorite drawings such as the one below and said that that's one of your best, and it didn't need you to spend an extra 2 or 3 hours coloring and shading it.. that's as much detail as you need.

I don't want to believe him, but as much as I don't.. evidence tends to support what he says. Two of my biggest recent efforts are both pictures that got almost laughably low feedback if you look at the pages for them:

https://www.furaffinity.net/view/32160168/
It's incredibly demotivating when that happens, I'm so proud of a picture, work hours on it, and then hardly any people seem to give a crap about it. Then I go and put up a picture that I spent 20 minutes on like the picture above and it gets a mountain load of feedback.
What do you guys think about this phenomenon? Is there truth in it? Should I just do sketch work? Am I wasting my effort doing more, like adding too much icing to a cake? The two failed pictures in the links may have just not been interesting ideas to people I don't know.. but at least if I'd only sketched them it would have been 30 minutes of effort rather then 4 hours.. maybe I'd get more work done and out there if I stopped putting so much effort into them.

That's one thing that I keep hearing from people. Especially when it comes to 'alluring art.. sometimes sketches are even sexier because like you said it lets the viewer fill things in.

2019-07-28 03:25:56 +0000 UTCAs another artist I say it doesnt matter!! You don't need to complete everything but if you personally like finished pieces more, go for it. But I get the same way where sometimes I really like sketches. Sketches are good too because the brain automatically fills in the lines it likes best. Sketches have their own charm in the same way that finished pieces do. Make whatever makes you happy, and we'll appreciate it all "finished" or not!

2019-07-21 20:55:27 +0000 UTCits the internet age, its now quantity over quality nowadays also at least personnally the sketches you draw well they seem to have more "personality" and can be interpreted many ways and it meshes more likely to your style of drawing as for your coloured work well looking at your two examples given they are both "darkly lit" scenes, and also has humans in the scene too which could be throwing people off but as previously said, something you could do, make some sketches thoughout the week place them onto a single post upload a poll to see which one would be best to refine and only upload the finished piece to your art site of choice or you can just follow the old addage "sex sells" and just post car porn

2019-07-20 19:48:20 +0000 UTCi think the main case of what makes art popular is the content of it - generally speaking, adult art gets more atraction than general or just slightly erotic. Maybe you could try do linearts and if the feedback on it is good, or you like the pic overall (of whats on it or you like how it turned out) finish it to colors. Or do patreon polls with sketches which one should be finished.
