My man David is spittin' facts

Unfortunately people have been conditioned by movies and most tv shows where one bullet to the gut or a simple stab wound and oooops, you're dead, eyes open as you quietly fall. The human body takes A LOT of suffering before dying. Unless the brain gets immediately destroyed, the body is going to try to survive, and even then, the rest of it just wants to keep going. It's disturbing and amazing at the same time. And Erwin. He said it himself, he had to stand on a mountain of dead comrades to achieve his own dream. He said it to Levi, that Erwin was fighting for his own self, not humanity. In the end, Erwin chose humanity by sacrificing himself and his own dream, so that Levi could achieve victory for them taking down the Beat Titan. Levi realized this, that Erwin was finally free, and chose to let him rest in peace.

To your point about when Bertholdt is eaten. It's a brilliant and intentional little touch. It forces you to realize that for nearly the entire episode Bertholdt was right there in frame and neither the characters, nor viewers consider that they're talking about him like he's an object rather than a person.

Crazykirsch

Hey, even if he doesn't fight much, he still had to go through two (IIRC) years of hell (training). Then he joined the Scouts and probably got even more ripped from that.

Gestrid

Honestly, I needed the break after all the heavy-hitting episodes we got back when I watched this for the first time. Plus, the point of the next episode gets all the attention its warranted. (Don't wanna say it outright because it's still spoilers.)

Gestrid

I just noticed. Armin's pretty damn ripped for a "bookworm" who doesnt fight lol

Antoine Jones

I meant more reacting wise. on my own there been a couple times where ive teared up but it's rare.

Aj Rich

thats the closest you got to a tear in A show so far? How did you get through Fullmetal Alchemist (the original not Brotherhood) without crying on about 5 different occasions? I sure as hell cried plenty of times before the final episode lol

Antoine Jones

I disagree slightly. Tokyo Ghouls season 1 was good. Season 2 was at least watchable/decent. Now Season 3 was absolute garbage with ZERO redeeming quality. I only watched it because "I invested this much time into it.. I might as well see it through til the end"

Antoine Jones

Episodes "Hero" and "Midnight Sun" are my top 2 fav episodes of AoT. Of course there are many other episodes that I absolutely LOVE, but these two are irreplaceable for me. R.I.P. Erwin and welcome back Armin.

Eren Jaeger

I got super sick last night and thanks to this video dropping at 4AM (my time), it helped distract me during the last hour before the doctor's opened up. Thank you!

Rach

Any chance you can drop the next two episodes together? next episode is heavely padded with filler so the episodes end at dramatic points

Alright, I think I've gathered my thoughts a bit more. (Yes, I've seen this episode before, and I still need to gather my thoughts.) This episode is quite possibly one of the best episodes of any anime ever. It's gotta be right up there with Tokyo Ghoul's season one finale. (Though I wouldn't recommend Tokyo Ghoul at all. Every season after season one is absolute trash.) Your reaction was pretty much the same reaction: "ARMIN'S ALIVE?!" and then stunned silence for most of the rest of the episode. Also, yeah, scientifically speaking, Armin being able to breath should be impossible, but this isn't the first time an anime has taken liberties with its science.

Gestrid

One of my favorite things about this episode is that there is absolutely no music. None. Nothing whatsoever. Not even an intro. At least... not until the end, after Levi had made his choice. "Midnight Sun" is an absolutely amazing episode. I... I honestly don't know how else to describe it.

Gestrid

I feel you man. Although, logically, Erwin was definitely the right person to save as Hange stated, it was well written in that it makes you understand why Levi made the choice he did and save Armin instead. Just watch out for the lack of OST in this episode compared to the rest of the series and you realise how well directed this episode really was.

Paul Coffield

Erwin was the right choice, but he killed hundreds of scouts just to be the only one alive, let alone all the others that he's sent to their death for his own personal dream. He probably couldn't handle the survivor guilt any longer. Not to say Armins a bad choice.
