Reiner tries to read a label on canned food and can't. Hence its a unknown language. Not sure what you mean when you say "how does Reiner know its an unknown language?". The only weird thing is the fact Ymir knows it.

This show is just crazy with all those cliffhangers and hype moments. And not even the plot is hyping like crazy but also the on point music and animation.
