Picnic At Hanging Rock PATREON EXLCUSIVE

This movie... I think I would have a better experience and reaction on a second watch.

With the expectation of a mystery to be solved, you look for clues instead of realizing what is actually happening in lieu of an answer.

I hope you enjoy my reaction either way but I will be rewatching this :)

The silent video is interesting. I do not remember seeing the circle of stones where Mrs Appleyard put her umbrella, coat and bag on. I was up there last week and cannot remember seeing that. I will have to look at the photos on my phone I took and see if it shows up. There is one place that is called Vampires Cliff but when I was there I could not see why it was called that. Did not seem like much of a cliff as it really was a lower part of the climb to the rocks up near the summit. Some guy called T.Scott engraved his name T. Scott into a rock with 1866 there. I wonder if it was him trying to claim the land there in that time or possibly him thinking he was the first person to climb the summit there. Maybe it was harder to get up there then than it is now. I think someone already owned the land before then and the area of the rocks was eventually turned into a public reserve. There is actually a racecourse there too. Apparently every New Year's Day they have a race meeting there. Might be fun to got to it next year.

wow!! I would love to see a kangaroo haha. I'd love to see Hanging Rock - Newfoundland has a lot of volcanic geology. We actually have a place where the ocean floor (mantle) is exposed and you can walk on it!

I actually went to Hanging Rock today. For the Geologist in you, it turns out it is called Soda Trachyte volcanic type of lava from millions of years ago. I tried to avoid thinking of the haunting atmosphere of the movie as I drove there so put on some good music in the car that had my mind somewhere else, far away from thinking eerie vibes about the place. It was a nice sunny spring day so was a perfect time to check it out. I did not find anything eerie about it whilst I was there. I was more fascinated with all the crevices between so many of the rocks. I spent about two hours wandering around but did actually get lost a few times as I went off the trail that there for tourists and so many of the rocks look similar you cannot find what direction you came from. I eventually found my way back to a path but in between , scared a big kangaroo at one point that was probably enjoying the midday sun until I scared him. I should have visited this area years ago as it less than two hours drive from where I live but it never crossed my mind before until the movie made me think why I had never been before.

Heh, I warned you this was art-house (like Possession and Lynch films)... the thematic elements are more important than the diegetic mystery that you might see in weird-but-still-traditional films like say, Fight Club, Donnie Darko or Inception. We're on a whole new level here, haha. So maybe a good rule of thumb when going into an art-house film is to spend a lot more time paying attention to subtext, asking WHY you're seeing/hearing any of this at all apart from plot, asking how it reflects the real world outside the film, and also assume you won't get the answers you want (i.e., expect and appreciate lots of ambiguity and unanswered questions). To be fair, knowing the ending of the book upon which it's based actually helps a little (again, it tells you what happens within the internal story, but not why it happens or what it really means). But to help you out with what I mean, early on in this film, there's a shot of a girl using a flower press. That means more than just her making something nice for valentine's day.
