I think it was targeted because they do speak about how they needed someone strong in their faith - like when they tried to tempt him to cheat and he went back to bed. It is all very unsettling, that ending is burned into my brain haha

I joined in last 24 hours to mainly watch Twin Peaks and the movie Fire Walk With Me but thought I would check out what else is to watch. I thought I would give this old movie a try after remember seeing it sometime before. Well it turns out I obviously had only seen part of this movie and the ending as I never remember the disturbing aspects that no child was truly ever missing and the whole thing was a weird set up from the start to bring someone from the mainland to their island and kill them. Very disturbing cult religious people can believe in some very weird things to justify killing another person against their will. It seems maybe more chilling that it turns out he seemed very religious himself, just off a different type. Did they actually target him on purpose or was it just random what policeman on the mainland would get the message to follow up?

I once read that Britt Ekland in that dance-around-the-room scene, didn't mind being filmed from the front, but refused to be filmed from behind. So, all the shots of her from behind, banging on the walls or whatever, are a body double.

I think folk horror is a top subgenre of mine. I like seeing tradition and belief woven in. There’s also something to say about trying to understand the world you’re in while there’s a horror going on in the background (which always ends up being the foreground). It’s always strange but fascinating in the best way

I hadn't revisited The Wicker Man in quite some time and had forgotten some but not all of the animal stuff. Still a powerful film. Many holidays are actually rooted in paganism. Valentine's Day for example stems from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia. This is considered one of the "big three" of folk horror, the other two being Witchfinder General and The Blood on Satan's Claw. Two particularly hypnotic performances in each of those from Vincent Price and Linda Hayden, respectively. There's plenty of great folk horror out there though. Eyes of Fire to name one right off the top of my head. There's no way the director of The Witch didn't see it, as the basic setup is virtually identical.
