Black Horror & Black Trauma: Where Is The Line? (working title)

As a fan of Black media and horror, I have found this conversation interesting. In a genre like horror, where issues of race, gender, sexuality, and class have always been part of the framing of the horror—what is the line between Black trauma and Black horror? How much of our history are we allowed to put into these stories, and how do we communicate our different boundaries to each other without trying to harm or judge?

Amazing episode. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, honesty, humor, and critical information 💓

Just wondering, what were your thoughts on Swarm? It’s probably the first black slasher thing I’ve ever seen, but I feel like it kinda devolves into misogynistic, anti-black, ableist, and queerphobic rehashings of the same tropes by the end.

Watching your video on YouTube. But I needed to come here and say your lighting in this video is fantastic. You look great!

Had me all “WeeBay from the Wire Gif” in real time.

Princess’ brief dissertation on Alien v. Predator might have been the biggest twist of the video

I really appreciate this video, thanks so much for making it, Princess Weekes! I agree, a prestige 2024 romcom revival would be amazing. It doesn't have to be a prestige romcom revival (a Black romcom revival would be fantastic, whether or not prestige is involved). Edited to add: I assumed prestige meant 'upper class regency' when I first made this comment. Then I looked up what it meant online, and online dictionaries say prestige means something that is important or has a good reputation.

The box showing scenes from Night of the Living Dead is floating over your face in the first few minutes. Anyway, I enjoyed this video! Snow White in the woods was so scary to me at a young age and you slipping it in there was delightful. Also, yeah, Lovecraft Country had some parts I loved, but that was a lot of brutality as the show went on. I was there for Wunmi Mosaku’s Ruby.

killin me with the snow white bit through the Halloween store i was right there w u at that age 🙀🙀 (and also enjoy horror now that I'm an adult) loved the video and your perspective on how these aspects are displayed in film. and big agree on Lovecraft Country 😫 wanted so much more triumph from it for the main cast...

I really resented how much the post episode conversations of Lovecraft Country became “guys! Look at THIS easter egg reference to yet another crime against humanity committed against us!!!” Same with the trailer drop for the Candyman reboot (which, DGMW, I did like the artistry of it with the animation and silent storytelling, but come on), and same with Them. I really feel like all the easter eggs and shower realizations people did after watching Get Out kinda brain poisoned us. Like the moment people were like “omg…he picked cotton out of the couch…and it saved him…GUYS, he was PICKING COTTON!!!” and also “she was keeping the colorful fruit loops away from the white milk! OMG SEGREGATION!!!”, it was kinda over for us. So many people on twitter dot com trying to prove that they know history and are clever without slowing down to remember this shit happened to our grandparents/within living memories and too many people who write and make films exclusive for that demographic.
