for part two, it's a bit of a hodgepodge... we made a few stops on the trip back.
bombay beach (on the salton sea) - this is a sort of art community (but it also just has a lot of folks who want to live cheaply and be far from society) in a little town that used to be a beautiful, popular resort town, but some bad decisions made by the state many decades ago salinated the sea and made it pretty inhospitable to tourists (and animals and fish). it's another time capsule in the desert.
pinot air force base - and speaking of time capsules, the pinot air force base outside of tucson, arizona, has a ton of old commercial planes from all around the world in various states of disarray. while tours were heavily limited at the time, we still saw quite a bit by driving around, including some of the fairly recently retired 747s from delta.
joshua tree - this is a sort of hipster desert getaway in california. i'm not really sure what there is to say here - it was just nice to see the desert landscape and the animals (lots of jackrabbits) and we had a little cowboy pool outside that was fun for some double exposure photos.
palm springs - nearby joshua tree in the desert is a more hip/upscale community with lots of beautiful mid-century style homes and buildings... we just drove through this time. we also stopped on the way at the cabazon dinosaurs (which you may recognize from the film "the wizard"... no?).
