Ballet Dad Part 3
“I…” both Aimee and Jamie say at the same time.
The two have been sitting looking at anything but each other for the last five minutes. Jamie motions Aimee to go on.
“I’m Sorry for earlier,” Aimee apologizes.
“It’s OK,” says Jamie wiping his nose on the back of his hand, “My mom’s calmed down now you’ve said sorry.”
“I’m in big trouble,” Aimee laments.
“Your mom does seem pretty mad at you,” Jamie agrees
“Yeah,” Aimee says with a sob. “Everyone keeps treating me like a child.”
“My Mom’s like that too,” Jamie replies, giving her a sour smile. “She doesn’t think I can do anything myself.”
“Oh,” Aimee says, nodding her head in agreement.
She knows that Jamie doesn’t understand what she is really going through but since it is nice to have someone to talk to she simply says, “OK.”
Jamie moves closer to Aimee and his face lights up as he asks “You want to play cars?”
Aimee can’t help but smile as she nods her head, “Yes.”
An Hour Later…..
Samantha looks down to see Aimee standing there smiling. Aimee looks happier than Samantha had seen her since the change. Jamie’s mom and Tabitha are in the kitchen trying not to eat all the cookies they just backed. “Are you ready to go girls?” Samantha asks.
“I’m ready!” pipes up Aimee.
“Did you play nicely and say sorry to him, asks Samantha sternly.
“Yep,” says Aimee as she rolls a car across the coffee table, “Jamie said I could take this car home with me too.”
“What a nice boy,” Samantha says smiling at the idea of her former husband receiving a gift from a boy. “Are you sure he’s OK with you, having it?”
Aimee’s face darkens at the accusation, “I haven’t stolen it. If that’s what you’re saying”
And there’s my cynical husband, thinks Samantha. “So Sassy,” Samantha says under her breath as she gets up.
Samantha moved to the kitchen with Aimee hot on her heels, “I think he wants to be my friend,” says Aimee. “He said we should play together at school tomorrow.”
“That’s great sweety,” Samantha says not looking at Aimee, “Where’s your sister?”
“Here we are,” Announces Jamie’s mom as she and Tabitha appear from under the counter Tabitha holding a biscuit tin. “I’m going to send a lot of these home with you,” says Jamie’s mom as she starts loading cookies into the tin. “Lord above knows I don’t need them,” She adds patting her stomach.
Aimee walks over to Jamie’s mom. Everyone falls silent. “Thank you, Mrs. Lancaster,” says Aimee as she curtsies, “And once again I am so sorry for today.”
Jamie’s mom just smiles and gives Aimee a little hug saying, “Already forgot, love.”
Samantha kept glancing in the review mirror at what she was quickly coming to think of as ‘her girls.’ Aimee was so much happier and free-spirited than Aaron. The two girls were interacting with each other rather than, Aaron playing on his phone or grumbling about interest rates all the way home. It was as if someone had blown all the storm clouds out of Samantha’s life.
An hour later the tempest returned. “What do you mean I have to sleep in Tabi’s room?”
All the joy of the last two hours flooded away from Samantha. Samantha twitched her nose and waved her arm in the direction of Tabitha’s single four-poster bed. In moments the bed transformed into a set of pink bunk beds with a staircase up one side and a slide down the side. Tabitha grins from ear to ear and runs up the stairs and comes down the slide.
Not wanting to deal with her husband’s protests Samantha falls back on the time-honored parent trope, “Because I said so.”
Much to Samantha’s surprise Aimee doesn’t yell back at her but begins to weep softly. “I wanna sleep in my own bed,” she whines.
Samantha’s heart hurts. She almost gives in but then she remembers how embarrassing it was to have to pick Aimee up from school. “I told you, Aaron,” she says her resolve restored. “Whilst you’re a little girl, you sleep in Tabi’s room.”
“No,” says Aimee still crying a little. “No,” Aimee says again adding a foot stomp. “I’m not…”
With that Samantha picks up Aimee and puts her on the top bunk, “Someone’s tired.”
Aimee buried herself under the blankets. Samantha starts to rub her back. “Look, Aimee,” Samatha cooed and then sighs. “It’s just that you’re a little girl. And sleeping with a little girl next to me is a little…well weird.”
“Then change me back,” comes Aimee’s muffed voice from under the blankets.
“I can’t do that sweetie,” Samantha says. “But we will try harder next week.”
“I won’t,” says Tabitha from the lower bunk, “I like having a little sister.”
“You’re not helping,” says Samantha through gritted teeth.
Samantha pulls the blankets off of Aimee and is about to say more when she notices Aimee is fast asleep. Samantha kisses both of her daughters on the forehead and turns out the light.
The Next Day……
“Hey, Jamie,” Says Aimee sitting on the school’s front step, “I waited for you.”
“Hi,” Jamie says looking around, “Where’s your mom and sister?”
“They’re just ahead,” Says Aimee as she gets up and dusts off her skirt, “Oh and Samantha is not my mom.”
Jamie looks confused as he says “She’s not? B-b-but looks just like her.”
“It’s a long story,” Aimee says and then frowns. “You look sad. Are you OK?”
“Y-yeah, I’m fine,” Jamie says looking at his shoes, “It’s Just, no one has ever waited for me before.”
“Well, I have now,” Aimee points out beaming at Jamie. “We are friends now, right?”
“Friends?” Jamie pauses not wanting to make Aimee mad. “But you’re a girl. We can’t be friends.”
Jamie waits for Aimee to explode. She doesn’t. Instead, she takes his hand giggling. “Don’t worry. I’m more like a boy than you know.”
The morning flew by and the next thing Aimee knew it was playtime. Aimee and Jamie wandered away from the other kids. “It’s nice to have someone to talk to at playtime,” Aimee thinks out loud.
Jamie has not stopped smiling all day and Aimee can’t help but hope it’s because of her. “I know,” Jamie says. “You want to play chase?”
“Nah,” Aimee lies. She would love to play chase but Samantha will kill her if she stains another uniform. “Samantha gets annoyed if I come back all dirty,” Aimee explains.
“Yeah,” Jamie says kicking a rock, “My mom is the same.” “Jamie thinks then says, “Maybe we can go on the slides?”
“Ok,” Aimee agrees, “Can you please tell me if my dress is riding up?”
“Okay,” Jamie says nervously but is happy to help. “I can’t believe my best friend is a girl. My brothers keep teasing me about it.”
“Wait, What?” Aimee asks, stopping as if she has hit an invisible wall. “I’m your best friend?” Aimee asks her face flushing.
Jamie runs his hand through his hair. “Yeah,” he says kicking another rock, “Is that not OK.”
After a few moments of silence, he finally looks up into Aimee’s sunny face, “That is so OK,” says Aimee who then gives him a quick peck on the cheek and goes skipping off to the slide.
Aimee is on a major high for the rest of the afternoon and even into the night. Samantha and Tabitha have noticed the change in Aimee. They are both very aware of what or who has caused the change and both agree they like Aaron much better this way. Still, a deal is a deal. Tomorrow was ballet day and Samantha had promised to try to get Aimee to ballet so she could turn back into Aaron.
“Hey Tabi why don’t you and Aimee practice?” Samantha said pulling everything out from under the sink for the third time that day.
“Mom,” called back Tabi, “She says she doesn’t want to practice.”
“What?” asks Samantha hitting her head on the sink. “Ow,” she exclaimed rubbing her head, “I’m calling a plumber. Not even my magic can fix these old pipes.”
Samantha walks into the living room to find Tabitha dancing, but Aimee only watching and clapping or saying encouraging things. Tabitha looks at her mom and shrugs. “Thanks for calling Daniel’s home repair…” says Samantha’s phone in her ear.
“Yes, I have a leaky pipe in my kitchen,” Samantha explains returning to the kitchen, “I was wondering if you could come look at it.”
Samantha listens and then says “Yes, tomorrow would be great. Thank you.”
That job done Samantha returns to the living room. “Hey Aaron” she calls
The girl just sits there. Samantha’s temper momentarily flares then she thinks better of it. “Aimee,” Samantha asks.
The girl immediately turns her head in acknowledgment. “What’s the Matter,” Samantha asks kneeling so she is at Aimee’s level, “Don’t you wanna practice dancing with Tabi?”
“I don’t feel like it,” Aimee responded in almost a whisper.
“Come on sweety,” Samantha says and then asks, “what’s wrong?”
“It’s Jamie,” Aimee confesses. “Why did he have to be so stupid?” Aimee asks the room.
“Oh,” Samantha pulls back a little, “What’s happened?”
“He says we are best friends,” Aimee says. “Can you believe that?”
The truth was Samantha could. Mrs. Lancaster had said that Jamie didn’t make friends easily and was surprised that he had become such close friends with Aimee so fast. She had also more than hinted that she thought Jamie had a crush on Aimee. “Oh, that’s…” Samantha paused and searched her daughter’s face for any indication of what she wanted to hear, “Cute.”
“No, it’s not,” Aimee says shooting to her feet. “Now I’m going to feel like I’ve abandoned him when I change back.”
Tabitha came dancing by, “You mean if you change back.”
Samantha shot her other daughter a dirty look. “Not now Tabitha,” Samantha snapped.
Samantha turned back to Aimee who was staring off into space and mumbling to herself, “IF, I turn back.”
