Band of Brothers ep 7

Comments

It’s a common thing in the accounts of those we deem to be great soldiers. Remember ‘Master and Commander,’ when the Captain had to watch the doctor do surgery on himself. The Captain claimed he’d “seen all kinds of wounds,” then got rather green around the gills. Buck had seen, dozens of men killed and wounded but seeing Toye and Guarnere was too personal, perhaps? In the Civil War, Gen Thomas ‘Stonewall’ Jackson had a reputation for being utterly matter of fact about his dead and wounded men. In one battle, he summoned one of his trusted runners, a man he knew quite well. Jackson was informed the man had been killed and the General just nodded and said, “A good man…… get me another!” In battle that man was a cog in the machine and the machine needed to keep functioning. Later, though, while his army was in winter’s quarters, he was staying with a family and he developed a close relationship with the 7 year old daughter of the owner. He gave her ‘horsey back’ rides on his shoulders around the camp. The young girl died rather suddenly after a bout with one of those diseases we don’t die of today. Maybe scarlet fever or something like that. Gen Jackson’s staff were confused to see this tower of strength, an officer they’d never seen shed a tear at the loss of so many of his men break down wailing and crying at the child’s grave. It’s a common story; an unflappable combat leader who never lets grief at the loss of men stop him from leading the living to accomplish their mission can become completely undone when a certain person passes.

Darling Biss, you have many wonderful qualities. They come through in your reactions. You care about people. You dislike injustice and you’re not afraid to speak up when you think something is wrong. You do NOT, however, have much patience for fools, even less so for fools in leadership positions. Your disapproval of Dyke, though, was entirely practical. You demanded with perfect justice that men capable of fighting and accomplishing missions should be competently led. Whether you know it or not, you agree with a leadership principle written by Napoleon: “There are no bad regiments, only bad colonels (leaders).”

It's a Luger, brother. Not a Ruger. Semper Fi.

Lieutenant Dykes incompetence is legendary.

Awesome reaction Biss, i hear you! This episode is a heavy one, a lot of men died during this battle, the cold was creeping within the skin and morale is lowered in such condition, there is a well known battle outside Leningrad. known as the Siege of Leningrad, the cold and hunger, lack of resupplies for both the russians and the german troops froze to death in the every so biting cold. Lt Speirs was a legend indeed, and i agree with you. He was crazy but it also saved many by the way he was. Another man that was a legend of a similar kind was a british man called Jack Churchill, also known as Mad Jack, he was fighting on the beach of Normandie with a bow and arrow, a broadsword and bagpipes. There are even a photo of him running with the sword held in his hand against incoming bullets from the germans. He also made a statement. Churchill was said to be unhappy with the sudden end of the war, saying: "If it wasn't for those damn Yanks, we could have kept the war going another 10 years!" looking forward to the next episode, hi ho silver and Currahee!

Well Biss was super fired up over this episode, and understandably so. And yes it is a difficult watch. That is because it doesn't hold back anything and gives the audience an accurate representation of war.

heck yeah let's go

Another outstanding B.O.B. reaction.

Just finished and you definitely bring honor to the memory of all those who were lost when we remember what they went through. A lot of what this episode addressed is so true in terms of fear being cancer in a combat unit, the love and hurt you feel when you lose friends, and incompetence in leadership that you will sometimes find. All it takes to be an officer is a four year degree and getting accepted into an officer program (sometimes done while in college). To enlist takes getting a high enough score on your aptitude test for the job you want and signing the papers. So an enlisted man like Lipton might have 15 years experience and their new LT might be a 22 year old out of college. Chain of command says you still follow orders from the bottom up. My friend Joseph Nurre was killed on 21 Aug 2005 because of an idiot officer who prided themselves on not sending medics with gun trucks that were providing security to our convoys. Had one been there, it wouldn't have taken 10 minutes to call in Dustoff bird to get him out of there and he wouldn't have bled out on a helicopter. The problem with bad leadership has always been a feature but there's only so much you can do but knowing you have your boys with you is everything. Fuck officers (and NCOs) like Dyke, but thank god for the good men you will inevitably find yourself surrounded with - they make it okay. Good react, woman!

TOURNIQUET

Michael Aalgaard

Easy company and all the paratroopers didn't need to be rescued or saved. They are trained to fight behind enemy lines with the enemy surrounding. General Patton decided on his own that they needed to be rescued and NOBODY ever asked him for help.

Michael Aalgaard

Dyke was grossly incompetent at best. Dyke wasn't yawning because he was tired. Some people's natural reaction to being nervous or scared is yawning.

Michael Aalgaard

Hoobler wasn't holding the Ruger or showing it to anybody. The Ruger just fired a single round for no reason.
