Schindler's List Full and early

One of my favorite movies now . I love it but it broke my heart so now I need a glass of wine

You are a real beautiful human being- appreciate your character in this reaction.

Geary Buchanan

You watch all the classics! You are a classic as well

Geary Buchanan

There’s an excellent play, turned into a movie by the BBC, written by a concentration camp survivor. It’s called “God on Trial” and REALLY makes you think.

Lamar Smith

Do you recall, interspersed throughout the movie where you have people, in the movie mostly women, say things like, “Yay, we’re workers now! It CAN’T get any worse for us!” Later one woman argued against the idea that the Germans were gassing Jews by saying, “….but we’re WORKERS!!??!! That doesn’t make any sense! We provide a valuable service! It would be INSANE to kill us for no reason!” All of that is, historically, true. If you ask the question, “Why didn’t they resist at this……. or that…… point?” Well, because at every one of those points, they couldn’t imagine things getting worse or a logical country just wouldn’t do something as insane as killing your own workforce. It simply wasn’t logical

Lamar Smith

This movie was based on a written account of life in Plazsow. Gothe, as commandant, was heavily featured. Helen Hirsch’s testimony was part of it. Recall the scene where Amon wanted to have the ‘hinge guy’ executed but the pistol failed. Then there’s the scene where the little boy identifies the man who stole the chicken as the man already shot. Goethe’s character is fairly universally described as ‘sadistic.’ From all accounts that survive, witnesses describe how he seemed to enjoy causing pain and distress to others who were no threat to him. He spares the young boy not because he ratted out the chicken thief. Amon let him live because he’d shown a cheeky courage in a stressful situation. We have reports that he chose Helen as his maid at the ‘villa’ because she showed strength and fear. He couldn’t wait to get her in his house where he could utterly break her and tear her down.

Lamar Smith

Did you understand the scene right after the Nazi ‘doctor’ was listening for Jewish people still in hiding in the ghetto? The one soldier was playing the piano and two others were arguing over whether he was playing Bach or Mozart? The point of that was that the Holocaust wasn’t carried out or produced by some fringe barbaric nation. The country that created this catastrophe was the same one that produced Gøethe & Schiller. This was a modern, civilized nation. The warning isn’t “We need to watch out for those sneaky Germans” the lesson is “we need to watch ourselves, this could just as easily happen here as somewhere else.

Lamar Smith

The biggest irony in this movie is the scene where he’s having dinner with his wife and he starts laying out his vision for his future. He talks about “….leaving her with two steamer trunks full of money” and he’s 100% correct in that. Before that, though, he says, “No one will ever forget the name ‘Schindler!’” About that, he’s also completely correct but for reasons he can’t possibly fathom at that moment.

Lamar Smith

Biss, you’ve said you’re a reader. For this topic, the Holocaust, I’d recommend above all others, Dr. Timothy Snyder. His books ‘Bloodlands’ and ‘Black Earth’ mention both the country of your birth and where you currently live. REALLY recommend you get those

Lamar Smith

Do you recall the little blonde girl who was screaming, “Goodbye Jews! Goodbye Jews!….” That young lady was Steven Spielberg’s daughter. I’ve read accounts of Steven Spielberg getting physically ill during the filming of this.

Lamar Smith

I have gone through some rather extreme swings between periods in my life when I was very comfortable and I’ve gone through periods in my life when everything I owned would fit in a very few cardboard boxes. That line, “…..nice things cost money.” has seen service at both of the extremes of that pendulum.

Lamar Smith

The Pianist is another Fantastic movie for this subject.

Jason Allen Wolcott

I enjoyed your reaction to this. Didn't watch it when you first uploaded since I had seen it when it first came to home video in 93. After watching it again, I can safely say I can go without seeing it for another 29 yrs. The movie is shot and acted beautifully, but man the story is too much for me. Thanks for the videos.

Some soldiers were literally forced under threat of death to be in the war. It's not black-and-white. Sure, there were a lot of soldiers who would succumb to abusing their position and power and lack of empathy, but I have a hard time seeing that it was the case even with the "typical German soldier".

Henkan

Absolutely fantastic and timeless movie. There's tons of details and themes, but just to name one: there is a dichotomy of Schindler learning empathy, as opposed to Goeth trying, and rejecting it. You've been on a big WW2 streak lately, and I'd hate to recommend more movies set in this time period, but "the Pianist" by Roman Polanski (yes, he's big douchebag, but the movie is still really great) is another must-watch. The actor who plays Amon Goeth, Ralph Fiennes, has a lot of great "villain roles" - he also plays Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies. However, I highly recommend watching a movie where he plays the most sweet-hearted man: "the Grand Budapest Hotel". It's a quirky movie, but extremely funny, and highly rated!

Henkan

As you stated in "Band of Brothers" The typical german soldier was just "doing their job" ........Do you REALLY still believe this???

I hope you understand now why we thought Schindler's List didn't belong on a poll. Such a human hero, Oskar. His slow, incremental transformation is so believable. A businessman who wanted to profit from war, but saw that this was worse than mere war. And did what he could to stop a little part of it. Oskar Schindler had no other successes to his name. But when the human race needed him to step up, by god he did. I'm glad the movie touched you so deeply and thanks for the family story at the end. I'm sorry for joking about Transylvania being Hungarian on Twitch =/

Alex Park

I can't believe this actually happened, and though difficult to watch, it should be. It is important to know that it did happen, that it could happen again, and that it can't happen again. Good decision not to line the bottom of your eyes. I enjoyed the reaction, as always.

Bandmaidfanatl

Love this movie!

This is so much more than just a "movie", it's a masterpiece! I cannot begin to imagine living in fear like the Jewish victims endured. Such terror and sensless brutality.........Such courage and humanity. You gave us a wonderful reaction Madalina and I'm so impressed by your knowledge and quick intelligence. Thank you. P.S. There's no such thing as an "ugly crying face". . . . Crying is just another part of human beauty.

simon ashworth

No matter how many times I have seen this movie the scene with the dead body of the little girl in the red coat gets me every time.

Michael Aalgaard

I cried with you and then some more. I actually haven't watched this until now. It was on my "to watch" list for years but for some reason I couldn't make myself watch it. thank you for this reaction. "1100, so many" ... and yet so few. I think this is the time to react to "The fallen of World War II by Neil Halloran" where you can see the numbers and though the killing of the 6 million jews might have been the cruelest part of the war, their numbers are "small" compared to the total. for everyone who hasn't seen this, get tissues ready, this is insane to what we are capable of.

Sven

Filming this movie in black and white was done artistically and not done do to technological limitations.

Michael Aalgaard

This was the first movie I submitted for a reaction. It took awhile but you eventually watched it. I told you it was good lol.

Michael Aalgaard

Go have your glass. After that you deserve it! It's seeing the real life people and their children and grandchildren at the end that always gets me. I'm not going to give this movie a rating cause I believe it transcends that, and a rating can not do it justice.
