Vinland Saga S2 EP 17 & 18 - UNCUT

Comments

Miklagard was apparently a city the Vikings found in Constantinople, it was the biggest city they had seen so they named it that, literally meaning The Great City. The great wealth of the city soon made it a tempting prey, though because of the size of the city the Vikings quickly decided to go into the service of the emperor. He established his own Viking-guard known as the Varangians. (Oh, I love how you later on point this out and know about it. That's so cool!) Snake makes a compelling argument here. What does constitute life's worth? Is one person more important than another? Than 5? It's the Trolley Problem all over again. Every person is important to someone. To weigh someones life over another is just impossible. Gardar not responding to Thorfinn's words, Snake's stabs or anything but words from Arnheid is super beautiful. Gardar also being super respectful and thankful for the cart towards Sverkel shows that he wasn't actually a mindless brute who would kill everyone in his way to get what he wanted but that he was pushed to his last legs. Sending Gardar off like this is the best we could've hoped for. He died happy and right with the person he loved the most. It's the best anyone can hope for. And the same goes for Arnheid. Seeing Gardar's and Arnheid's past just makes me cry so bad. It's just so beautiful seeing the happy moments in their life. Even after everything horrible they have suffered. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't cry here. Welcome home, Gardar. The author said that he wanted to write about life, love and death. This moment captures every single one of those aspects perfectly. To me this is the single best moment of both seasons. And it is time. Canute is finally arriving at the farm. Luckily Ketil and Thorgil arrived a few days earlier with Leif. You can see so much sadness and shame on Olmar's face it's so sad. I love the talk between Thorfinn and Einar here. Them reflecting on what happened and Einar trying to console Thorfinn that what he did was right. Thorfinn here does realise that he didn't even try to solve it by talking it out, he instantly resorted to violence against Snake. It's great to see that Thorfinn doesn't want to hurt anyone and wants to solve it by talking it out first. But it's easier said than done. It's so sad looking at Ketil here. He's just so down in the dumps, learning of the escape attempt, it's just so sad seeing him like this. We know he's a kind man but just like Gardar, he was pushed to the edge. And just like Sverkel said, the more wealth you have, the more you are afraid of losing it. You can imagine Ketil is more afraid of losing all he has than anyone else. It's cute that Pater here offers Leif to also buy out Arnheid, but what she did doesn't go unpunished. Punished in the wrong way as well, sadly. It just hurts to see this happen to her, especially with the child she has in her. I think I winced every time he hit her. Even worse is the fact that he's willing to beat her with that stick when he didn't want to do it to the children before, he was so against it and now he's willing to do it to a woman with a baby inside her, it's just painful. Glad Snake came and stopped him. Especially when Snake was the one that suggested beating the children back then, even this was too much for him. I feel so bad for Einar too, him seeing someone he cared for, even could say loved in a way (even if it was one sided, he still did) beat to the inch of their life is just horrifying. Ketil has been pushed over the edge so much now that he's willing to fight the king. I sympathize with his situation, but it's not something you can just do or imagine you can win. After all, you're just a farmer with a small group of soldiers and slaves. They got whole armies. To be willing to fight still is kind of impressive. What a duo of painful episodes.
